Kirby Smart Shares His Thoughts Building Teams With the Transfer Portal

In a relatively short amount of time, Kirby Smart has built the University of Georgia's football program into one of the most dominant teams in the league. Not only is Smart's success in college football unprecedented, but the way he assembled his team in such a quick amount of time is also unique.

In the modern era of college football, it has become common for new coaches to utilize the transfer portal in order to build their teams from the ground up. However, Smart did not do that. Instead, he and his staff relied on talent which they have recruited while only utilizing the transfer portal as a means of necessity.

Earlier this week, Smart spoke with "Rick & Bubba" at the Regions Tradition 2023 tournament as to what his thoughts were about the portal.

"I don't want to have to go to the portal, I don't think it's a great avenue to success, to be honest with you. I don't think you can sustain that way, you have to build from it within."

While Smart is reluctant to use the portal as a means to build a team. He has certainly shown that he does not mind taking players from it when needed. Just this past season, the Bulldogs took in not one, but two receivers from the transfer portal in response to the departure of AD Mitchell. Mitchell decided to enter the portal following the 2022 season.

Regardless of how Smart decides to use the portal for his team, it is likely that there will be little to no complaints about how he does so should the Bulldogs continue their winning ways.
