Kirby Smart Shares Thoughts on Whether Georgia Has "Passed" Alabama as the Premier Program in CFB

Has Georgia supplanted Alabama as the best program in college football? Kirby Smart shares his thoughts.

For over a decade, The Alabama Crimson Tide has been the measuring stick for success in college football. In fact, most fanbases have found themselves asking the hypothetical question "Could we beat Alabama?" for years now. But the past two seasons have begun to demand the question, "Is there a new king in the college football world?".

In the two teams' previous matchup, Smart and the Bulldogs got the best of The Tide in a 33-18 victory during the 2022 national championship. The Bulldogs followed up their historic national championship season with a perfect 15-0 season that ended with another national title victory. Meanwhile, Alabama struggled during the 2022 regular season. Losing two conference games, which caused them to miss the college football playoff for just the second time since 2014.

It is tough to argue that Georgia has dominated roughly, the past 600 days of college football while Alabama has at times, looked like a shell of its former self. But does that mean the Bulldogs are now the "Top-Dawg" of the league? Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was asked a question similar to this earlier this week during a media event in Destin, Fl. The response from the Bulldogs' head coach was (as expected) dismissive of the idea.

Both Smart and Saban, who spent years as colleagues on Alabama's staff have been adamant that they do not encourage their team to any other program except themselves. This level of personal accountability (along with a handful of other factors) has likely led to the two programs' overwhelming success.

While the title of "Best Program in College Football" is certainly subjective and neither coach seems to be entertaining the argument, the 2023 college football season will likely provide a clearer picture as to whether or not Georgia has surpassed Alabama as the number one program in the country.
