A Review of Mike White's First Year as Georgia's Head Coach

Now that the first year of the Mike White experience has ended, it's time to take a look at how well his first season went

On March 15th, 2022 The University of Georgia introduced Mike White as Georgia's next head basketball coach. White, who had previously been the Florida Gators' coach for the last seven years undoubtedly had his work cut out for him. As he was inheriting the lowest-ranked team in the SEC that had won just six games during the 2021-22 season.

With limited resources, White began work immediately and pulled in Terry Roberts, Justin Hill, and Jusaun Holt from the transfer portal and signed forward KyeRon Lindsay as well. White's "jigsaw" of a team began the season in exciting fashion, surpassing their total wins prior to even beginning conference play.

The Bulldogs even began their SEC campaign in a strong fashion, defeating three out of their first four conference opponents...

That would be one of the last shining moments of the Dawgs' season, as a second-half collapse in Lexington would begin an excruciating cold streak that would haunt the Dawgs for the remainder of the season. After the loss to Kentucky, Georgia would win just three of their next 14 matchups which also included a first-round exit in the SEC Tournament to the LSU Tigers.

As the losses began to pile on, so did the criticisms of White and his team. So much so that some fans were even calling for his job. But though, the promising first half of the season certainly did not match the results of the back half of Georgia's season. White's first year as the Bulldogs' head coach showed excellent promise for the program going forward.

It should not be forgotten that just a year ago, the Bulldogs were easily the worst team in the SEC and won just a single game in the conference. It should also be mentioned that the feeling of apathy which surrounded the Bulldog's squad in 2021 was nowhere to be found in 2022. Stegman Coliseum was more filled than it had been in a long time and there was a sense of urgency around the program that had not been seen by Dawg fans in a few years.

While the program still has a long way to go. A losing streak to end the season, a first-round exit in tournament play, and a .500 record should not overshadow the massive strides that the Georgia Basketball team took in its first year under Mike White.
