Georgia Tech Completes Series Sweep vs Radford With 6-3 Win

Georgia Tech travels to Statesboro to face Georgia Southern on Tuesday

After winning the first two games of the series, Georgia Tech went into today looking for an opening series sweep to start the 2024 season. Yesterday, Aeden Finateri pitched a great game, and the offense had another strong day at the plate.

Mason Patel was taking the mound today for the Yellow Jackets and here is how the lineup looked:

1. CF Drew Burress

2. DH Matthew Ellis

3. SS Payton Green

4. 1B Cam Jones

5. 3B John Giesler

6. LF Trey Yunger

7. 2B Mike Becchetti

8. C Tyler Minnick

9. RF Parker Brosius

1st inning

The top of the first inning did not go well for Georgia Tech.

A walk and a single put two runners on base and then an RBI single gave Radford the early lead 1-0. There were runners on the corners with two outs and early pressure was on Patel.

He showed his talent though by striking out the final batter and limiting Radford to only one run in the first. Georgia Tech had a slight deficit to make up.

Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, it was a 1-2-3 inning and Radford held a 1-0 lead going into the second.

2nd inning

It was a quick inning for both teams. Neither one of them got a hit and Radford still led 1-0 heading into the third inning. Patel added two more strikeouts in the 2nd inning though.

3rd inning

Radford was threatening at the top of the third inning.

A leadoff double and then a single put two runners on the corners. Georgia Tech was able to force an out then Patel struck out his fourth batter of the game. There were two runners on with two outs with Drew Biggerstaff up to bat for Radford and he hit a two-out double to give himself three RBIs for the afternoon and the Highlanders had a 3-0 lead. Patel got out of the inning, but the deficit for Georgia Tech grew.

The bats for Georgia Tech got going though and in one swing, they were able to grab the lead.

Burress, Brosius, and Minnick all got on base and then Payton Green nailed a grand slam to give Georgia Tech a 4-3 lead.

4th inning

Patel exited the game in the 4th inning and was replaced by Camron Hill, who did not allow a run in the 4th, allowing Georgia Tech to get right back to work.

Giesler tripled to lead off the bottom of the 4th for GT. Becchetti then got an RBI on a fielder's choice to widen the lead to 5-3.

5th inning

Hill came back out for the 5th inning. He gave up a leadoff walk, but got the next three batters out.

Burress continued a monster weekend by hitting his third home run and extending Georgia Tech's lead to 6-3.

That was the only run of the inning for Georgia Tech, but they were able to push the lead to three runs.

6th inning

Carson Ballard came in for Hill in the top of the 6th. Hill did a nice job today, pitching two scoreless innings and Ballard was looking to breeze through the innings much like Hill had.

He got off to a great start. He got the first three batters down and Georgia Tech only needed nine more outs from its pitching staff.

Georgia Tech was unable to score a run at the bottom of the inning.

7th inning

After another easy inning for Ballard, Georgia Tech's bats had another opportunity to extend the lead.

After Brosius started the inning with a ground out, Burress continued his big day with a double. Ellis would ground out the next at-bat, but advanced Burress to third. Green was next at the plate and he had a chance to bring Burress home. However, Green grounded out and the inning was over.

8th inning and 9th inning

Ballard would finish the game and did not allow a run. While Georgia Tech's offense did not score another run, they did not need to. Georgia Tech would win the game 6-3 and move to 3-0 to start the season.

Ballard and Hill would have very good days pitching and Burres and Green did enough on offense to win the game.

Georgia Tech (3-0) will travel to Statesboro on Tuesday to face in-state rival Georgia Southern.
