Georgia Tech Run-Rules No. 13 NC State 15-5 To Complete Series Sweep

The Yellow Jackets are back on the field Tuesday vs Georgia State

After a thrilling win over No. 13 NC State yesterday, Georgia Tech Baseball went for the series sweep today. Not only did they get the sweep, but they run-ruled the Wolfpack 15-5 and dominated today's game from the start to the finish. Since losing the series to Georgia and then losing to Northeastern, Danny Hall's team has won eight in a row and has had a great start to ACC play.

Let's recap Sunday Afternoon's game.

McGuire got the start for the Yellow Jackets and Georgia Tech used the same lineup as they did yesterday:

1. LF Trey Yunger

2. CF Drew Burress

3. C Matthew Ellis

4. 2B Mike Becchetti

5. SS Payton Green

6. 1B Cam Jones

7. RF Parker Brosius

8. DH Bobby Zmarzlak

9. 3B Carson Kerce

McGuire did allow a single in the first inning, but no runs and the highlight was Ellis throwing out a runner at second. The game remained tied 0-0 going to the bottom of the first.

It did not take long for Georgia Tech to get on the board.

Trey Yunger came up to bat and hit a leadoff home run in the Yellow Jackets' first at-bat of the game. It was a great start to the game for the offense.

After Yunger's home run, Drew Burress and Matthew Ellis walked to give the Yellow Jackets two runners on base with no outs and Georgia Tech had a chance to do real damage in the first inning. Mike Becchetti was able to reach on a fielder's choice and Burress got to third, but Ellis was out at second. An RBI single from Payton Green gave Georgia Tech a 2-0 lead with one out.

Cam Jones came up to bat and reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error scored Becchetti to make it 3-0. Brosius came up to bat and grounded out to end the inning, but the Yellow Jackets got three on the board.

McGuire got in a little bit of a bind in the second inning but got out of it. He walked two batters but was able to get three outs, including one strikeout. Georgia Tech remained in the lead 3-0 going to the bottom of the inning.

Zmarzlak flew out and Kerce struck out to give the Yellow Jackets two quick outs and it looked as if it was going to remain 3-0. Then, Yunger hit his second home of the game to make it 4-0 and that was the start of another big inning for the offense.

That was not it though. Burress walked and then Ellis blasted a two-run home run to make it 6-0. The offense was playing at a high level and Georgia Tech was running away with the game early.

McGuire responded to the offense's hot start with a 1-2-3 third inning and Georgia Tech had a chance to stretch the lead even further.

After a pair of strikeouts, Brosius and Zmarzlak walked to give Georgia Tech two runners on, but Kerce flew out to end the inning. McGuire came back out for the fourth inning.

McGuire found himself in trouble again in the fourth.

He walked the first batter and while he got the next one out on a fielder's choice, a double put runners on second and third with one out. The Wolfpack got their first run on the board with a sac fly and Georgia Tech's lead was trimmed to 6-1. McGuire struck out the final batter and was able to keep a good lead.

Green hit a 2-RBI double to make it 8-1 and increase the lead for the Yellow Jackets. Jones struck out to end the inning, but things were still going as well as they could be for Georgia Tech.

It was another quick inning for McGuire in the 5th and the rest of the game was a blowout.

NC State was able to score four runs in the top of the seventh, but Georgia Tech run-ruled the Wolfpack 15-5 and got a dominating victory. The Yellow Jackets also scored four in the bottom of the seventh to be able to get the run rule and also the win for McGuire. It was the eighth straight win for the Yellow Jackets and they begin ACC play 3-0.
