Pitching Leads Georgia Tech To 4-1 Win Over Georgia

Georgia Tech takes game three of the series from UGA

After a couple of lackluster performances during the first two games of the series against rival Georgia, the Yellow Jackets were trying to avoid being swept by rival Georgia today. After losing 7-2 in a rain-delayed game on Friday, Georgia Tech's pitching could not hold the Georgia offense in check yesterday in what turned into a 16-6 blowout.

Georgia Tech needed a complete performance today, as there was not much good to be taken from the first couple of matchups against UGA. The offense had not produced and the starting pitching has not been able to find any consistency.

Jackson Finley was on the mound today trying to fix some of those issues. Here is how the Yellow Jackets are lining up today:

1. CF- Jake DeLeo

2. 1B- Angelo Dispigna

3. RF- Stephen Reid

4. C- Jack Rubenstein

5. P- Jackson Finley

6. 2B- Nicholas Romano

7. 3B- John Giesler

8. SS- Nico Senese

9. IF- Jett Lovett

A leadoff single got the action going for GT at the start of the first inning, but that would be it. Finley would then give up a leadoff single, but a flyout and then a double ended what was a quick first inning.

The second inning went as quickly as the first did, as both teams went 1-2-3 and we were going to the third

Georgia Tech was able to get the bases loaded in the top of the third thanks to a single from Sense, who advanced to second on a balk, and then a walk from Lovett and DeLeo reaching on a fielders choice. Dispigna got Georgia Tech their first lead of the series with a Two-RBI double to make it 2-0. That was all the damage GT could do though, as they then recorded three straight outs.

Finley got through another easy inning and he was cruising along through the first part of this game, which was exactly what the Yellow Jackets needed.

Georgia Tech was not able to do anything in the fourth, despite Romano being hit by a pitch to start the inning.

Georgia Tech defeated Georgia 4-1 in game three of the series

In the bottom of the fourth, Georgia scored their only run of the game. A leadoff walk to Ben Anderson started things off and then a single from Connor Tate advanced Anderson to third. Condon would then reach on a fielder's choice to score Anderson and cut the lead in half. Finley would then walk Corey Collins, but got two strikeouts to end the inning.

Finley would be done after that and he was fantastic today. He pitched four innings, giving up only two hits and one earned run and striking out four batters. Georgia Tech's pitching struggled in the first two games but was fantastic today.

After a pitching change from UGA, DeLeo struck out to start the fifth before Dispigna walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Reid would then walk to give Georgia Tech runners on first and second with one out when Georgia made another pitching change.

The pitching change did not make much of a difference. Rubenstein would walk to load the bases and then Drew Compton made his first appearance back for the Yellow Jackets since being injured. Compton got a bases-loaded walk to give GT a 3-1 lead, but Giesler and Romano struck out before Georgia Tech could add any more.

Ben King came in to replace Finley to start the fifth inning. He gave up a single, but a double play ended the inning. It was quick work for King, which is how much of the game went from this point. Georgia Tech was not able to do anything at the top of the sixth and King came back in to pitch.

He proceeded to strike out two in the inning and Georgia Tech led 3-1 heading to the 7th.

The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the 7th. After a leadoff triple from Rubenstein, Romano hit a sac fly to bring in Rubenstein to make it 4-1. That would be it for the offense though, but a three-run lead was better than nothing.

It was another easy inning for King in the 7th, which would be his last. He finished with three innings pitched and only gave up two hits and struck out three.

After another scoreless inning for the Georgia Tech offense, Terry Busse came in to replace King.

Over the final two innings, Busse struck out five batters and Georgia Tech won the game. It was a great performance from all three pitchers and the offense did just enough to take down the Bulldogs.

Georgia Tech is now 10-2 for the season and is back in action this Tuesday at 4:00 in Atlanta against Lipscomb.
