Georgia Tech linebacker Kyle Efford has decided to medically retire from the game of football today due to injuries that he has been dealing with over the years. Efford has been one of the most important players for the program under Brent Key and one of the best leaders, and he is going to continue to be with the team for the 2026 season as a player-coach and a captain.

For his career with the Yellow Jackets, Efford racked up 250 total tackles and he became the first player in 24 seasons to lead the team in tackles three straight season. It was not just his impact on the field though. Efford was a two-time team captain (2024 and 2026), a two-time All-ACC linebacker, and a member of the All-ACC academic team. One of the biggest things that describes Efford and the type of man and person he is was when he played after the Tennessee game knowing that the doctor had medically told him to retire but he wanted to get his team out of the rut they were in and staring 1-3 in the face. He gave it his all and wnated to get the team back to where they should be. He discussed that decision.

"I mean, that's just one of those things like when you talk about teammates, I mean, that's that's one of the whole reasons I played football. So  it was it was a quite an easy decision to make like my body doing my mind my mind or my teammates my my my mind automatically goes to my teammates like I said like I never wanted to be the one to give less so my teammates had to get more I always wanted to be that one to take that load off my guys," said Efford.

Head coach Brent Key said that Efford is one of the best linebackers to ever play at Georgia Tech and lauded his leadership skills today as well:

"He's not just one of the best linebackers to ever wear the White & Gold, but even more importantly, he's one of the best teammates and leaders."

Efford has been an essential part of the Yellow Jacket's defense under Key and has helped lead the turn around of the program over the past three seasons. Georgia Tech has a bowl game in every season under Key after four straight seasons of missing the postseason and in 2025, they had their best record since 2016, going 9-4. He still plans to have a role on the team and contribute

"But, I mean, I'll be around the guys the rest of the year. I mean, I mean, sure, I'll find me a little role here with the, you know, player coach type thing, but yeah, I'm not going anywhere. goes through your mind," said Efford.

What happens now?

Efford has missed games already this year, and we have gotten a look at how Georgia Tech's defense and linebacker rotation work without him in it.

E.J. Lightsey, Cayman Spaulding, Melvin Jordan IV, CJ Gamble, and Braylon Outlaw are going to be counted on in the middle of the defense, with Outlaw just being named the ACC's Rookie of the Week.

Here are the PFF (Pro Football Focus) grades and snap counts for Georgia Tech's linebacker room:

CJ Gamble- 94.4 (18)
E.J. Lightsey- 74.9 (271)
Melvin Jordan IV- 70.4 (107)
Braylon Outlaw- 66.6 (54)
Cayman Spaulding- 62.4 (195)

I think Lightsey is going to continue to lead the way when it comes to snaps, but it would be wise for the Yellow Jackets to make sure they incorporate Outlaw and Gamble more and more into the defense and let them learn.

Efford's leadership will not be easy to replace and when healthy, he was an All-ACC linebacker. Georgia Tech must move forward this weekend in Blacksburg, VA against Virginia Tech without him on the field.
