Bulldogs and Gaels meet in the WCC championship for the third-consecutive season

Once again, the West Coast Conference Tournament championship game features the Gonzaga Bulldogs taking on the Saint Mary's Gaels after both won-handedly in the semifinal round.

Gonzaga (25-6, 14-2 WCC) advanced to its 27th-straight title game with an 89-77 win over No. 3-seed San Francisco on Monday night. The offense was near unstoppable with 23 assists to just three turnovers, scoring an extreme 1.435 points per possession against one of the league's most stifling defenses. Much of that came in the second half, as the Zags shot 62.1% from the field after halftime and went 7-of-10 from behind the arc.

Ben Gregg spearheaded the second-half surge with four 3-pointers to finish with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nolan Hickman led with 20 points, 15 of which came after halftime, while Ryan Nembhard had a double-double with 16 points and 12 assists. Anton Watson finished with 17 points and seven rebounds.

With the win, Gonzaga captured its 17th-straight season with 25 or more wins — the longest active streak in the country. It also improved to 15-1 as the No. 2 seed in the WCC Tournament under Mark Few and won its 27th-straight opening game of the conference tournament.

Saint Mary's (25-7, 15-1 WCC) knocked off 4-seeded Santa Clara, 79-65, behind a hot shooting night from forward Alex Ducas. The fifth-year senior tied his season-high with seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points, 18 of which came in the first half, as the Gaels went 9-of-24 from long distance. Mason Forbes was effective as a screen and roll man, as he had a season-best 18 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the floor. Saint Mary's dominated the interior with 42 points in the paint and 35 rebounds to Santa Clara's 24.

Tuesday marks the third consecutive WCC championship between the Zags and Gaels and the 14th all-time. Only North Carolina and Duke have met in the conference tournament championship game as many times as Gonzaga and Saint Mary's have. The Zags have won 10 of the previous 13 head-to-head matchups.

The two WCC powers split the regular season series with each claiming a win on the opponent's home floor. The Gaels came out victorious in Spokane, 64-62, on Feb. 3. The Bulldogs returned the favor in a 70-57 triumph in Moraga, California, that snapped the Gaels' nation-leading 16-game winning streak.
