Juwan Howard Sort Of Takes Credit For Terrence Shannon Landing At Illinois

Michigan coach Juwan Howard spoke highly of Illinois guard Terrence Shannon after his 31-point performance in Tuesday's victory

Illinois guard Terrence Shannon was so close to playing his collegiate ball at Michigan.

So Wolverines coach Juwan Howard used Tuesday as a chance to say how his program missed out. Shannon had 31 points in the Fighting Illini's 97-68 victory at State Farm Center.

“Very familiar with Terrence Shannon,” Howard said. “You’re welcome. You’re welcome. Terrence Shannon is a guy I recruited who committed to the University of Michigan, as you all are very aware of, and you’re welcome. He’s played extremely well since he’s been here, and I’m so proud of him.”

Shannon initially verbally committed to play for the Wolverines. He then changed his mind, deciding to play at Texas Tech. Shannon has since transferred to Illinois, where is the leading scorer.

What impressed Howard the most is how Shannon bounced back after an early-season suspension because of a rape charge. A judge lifted the suspension in January, allowing Shannon to return after missing six games.

"He started out the season playing great basketball and then when he took that break, he came back just like he hasn’t lost a step," Howard said. "And that’s so hard to do, sitting out for the time that he did and to hit the ground running like he had. I commend their staff for being able to support him throughout this process, but it’s not easy for a young man, what he’s been through, I’m sure what the young lady’s been through. It’s not easy, on both sides.”
