No. 14 Indiana Hosts Purdue Sunday; Mackenzie Holmes Needs 17 Points To Break Scoring Record

No. 14 Indiana women's basketball (19-3, 10-2) will host Purdue (10-12, 3-8) Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Hoosiers won the Barn Burner Trophy in January, and Mackenzie Holmes is only 17 points away from breaking Indiana's all-time scoring record.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Mackenzie Holmes is on the cusp of history.

The fifth-year forward is just 17 points away from breaking the Indiana women’s basketball all-time scoring record set by four-year starter Tyra Buss Davison in 2014-2018. Buss totaled 2,364 points, and Holmes has 2,348, averaging 20.5 points this season. If she reaches her average Sunday — at home against rival Purdue — she will hold the record.

Holmes joked to the media that she hasn’t thought much about it.

“I mean, no, like I said last time, if it wasn't for you guys!” Holmes said Thursday after No. 14 Indiana’s 94-91 win over Michigan State. “I’m just kidding, but obviously it’s a blessing to be in this position. But, the main focus is beating Purdue. I want to beat Purdue. I want to sweep Purdue for my career. Don’t want to lose to them at home, especially not in Assembly Hall.”

Indiana has won the past 10 meetings with Purdue, and Holmes has been with the Hoosiers for nine of those. In late January, the Hoosiers defeated Purdue on the road 74-68 in the annual Barn Burner Trophy Game. With the series going back to Bloomington on Sunday, the 2011-12 season marked the last time Indiana lost to the Boilermakers at home, years before Indiana head coach Teri Moren arrived.

Purdue has lost three out of four since it played Indiana last month. The Boilermakers were blown out at Michigan State and lost by three at home to No. 5 Ohio State. They lost by 14 at Nebraska, then beat Illinois at home. Purdue is 1-7 on the road this season. Indiana is an unbeaten 12-0 at Assembly Hall.

Holmes led Indiana with 28 points on Thursday, putting the scoring record in reach for Sunday. She was held below her scoring average at Ohio State and two other previous times this season. But the question is when, not if, she will break the record.

In the last Purdue matchup, Boiler forwards Caitlyn Harper and Mary Ashley Stevenson combined for 31 points. Freshman guard Rashunda Jones also played great off the bench. Indiana veteran guards Sara Scalia and Chloe Moore-McNeil led with 20 points. Moore-McNeil posted her first-career triple-double and the program’s fourth against Michigan State.

Sunday’s game tips-off at 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Big Ten-plus. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive Teri Moren bobbleheads at the north and south lobby entrances.
