Iowa Football’s Loss to Minnesota Is a Painful Reminder: There’s No Margin for Error

Iowa had it all going for it, until it wasn't. Minnesota served Iowa a sobering reminder of where things really stand.

In this story:

Today was a very sobering reminder for the Iowa Hawkeyes. They got a taste of their own medicine from the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the form of a 13-10 loss that was built on turnovers, timely big plays, and doing the little things right. Minnesota did it better than Iowa.

It also reminds Iowa of one big, unavoidable, and glaring message: The Iowa Hawkeyes do not have the luxury of having room for error. Iowa can't make mistakes and still find wins. Iowa can't give teams extra chances. Iowa can't afford to be sloppy. Minnesota sent a stunning reminder of all of that.

Against Minnesota, Iowa did all of the things it normally does right, very wrong. It cost Iowa. It cost the Hawkeyes very dearly. And Iowa has no one to blame but itself.

Iowa isn't good enough to win playing bad

A handful of teams can win games even when they play bad. They have the quarterback, or they have the talent across the roster to simply be better over four quarters. Iowa doesn't have that. The Hawkeyes don't have the roster to win while making things easier for their opponent.

The Hawkeyes threw three interceptions, lost a fumble, and had a punt blocked. Those are things that Iowa normally does to teams. What's sickening is that after all of those mishaps, Iowa was in this game.

Phil Parker and his defense played their guts out to keep Iowa in this game, despite the offense and special teams doing everything in their power to find a way to give it away.

Iowa's room for error is minimal, if not entirely gone

At 5-2, Iowa's room for error the rest of the way is minimal if the Hawkeyes want to make a run to the College Football Playoff. Today has put the Hawkeyes in a spot where it's highly likely that they don't control their destiny anymore, even if they win out and get to 10-2.

Is 10-2 enough, with the lack of a resume-building win down the stretch, going to be enough for the Hawkeyes? If it is enough, it's a road game in the first round of the College Football Playoff at best. That's how damaging today's effort against Minnesota was.

In all of that, there is still a world where a 10-2 Iowa makes the CFP, but any wiggle room the Hawkeyes previously had has now evaporated, turning the pressure and noise up to the maximum level around this team, with five games remaining.
