They came in with scholarship offers a day apart. Now Iowa and Iowa State are competing for Reece Vander Zee's commitment.

The talented Rock Rapids (IA) Central Lyon GLR receiver officially visited Iowa State this past weekend. He was scheduled to do the same at Iowa beginning June 23.

"It is pretty much down to those two state schools. I want to commit by the end of summer," Vander Zee told HN.

Nebraska and new coach Matt Rhule offered Vander Zee a scholarship May 16. He also reported offers from Northern Illinois, Air Force, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, South Dakota State and others.

Iowa was Reece Vander Zee's first Power 5 offer, delivered when he was visiting campus on March 22. He was at Iowa State the next day, and the Cyclones offered. He visited both schools for games in the fall.

The in-state rivals are getting one more chance to impress Vander Zee (6-5, 190). He looks forward to being back in Iowa City in less than two weeks.

"I really like their winning culture and how they run their program on tradition," Vander Zee said of the Hawkeyes.

Vander Zee, who plans on majoring in Business, will soak up as much information as possible during his Iowa official.

"I just want learn all that I can to make the best decision for me," he said.

The Cyclones provided an enjoyable experience while playing host to Vander Zee on an official visit.

"I really liked how their coaching staff handled themselves and how genuine they were with the players," he said.

Vander Zee teamed up with 2023 Iowa freshman defensive back Zach Lutmer and others in helping Central Lyon win state championships in football and basketball this school year.

In football, Vander Zee caught 32 passes for 768 yards and 10 touchdowns during '22 in earning first-team all-state honors from the IPSWA. That organization tabbed him as a second-team all-state pick in basketball, where he averaged 17.8 points and 6.7 rebounds.

Vander Zee shows excellent body control and ability to catch the ball over defensive backs during his junior highlights. He also impresses on defense, where he intercepted four passes last fall.

On3 and 247Sports see Vander Zee as a three-star prospect. The latter ranks him as the No. 8 in-state prospect overall, while the former puts him ninth.
