What does Mitch Barnhart's retirement mean for Kentucky athletics?

In this story:
A big announcement sent shockwaves across all of Big Blue Nation as ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Mitch Barnhart is set to retire and that the Kentucky athletic department will be looking for a new athletic director.
A lot of fans don’t believe Barnhart did a good job as the AD for the Kentucky Wildcats, and this can spark a fun debate. Personally, I feel that Barnhart did a better job early in his career than he did later in his career. The new age of college sports, when it comes to NIL and the transfer portal, was the point where Barnhart began to fail in the eyes of Big Blue Nation.
In his last few years as the AD, Barnhart had to make a lot of tough decisions as he hired a new coach of the men's and women's basketball teams, and most recently, he hired a new head football coach. There is a ton of excitement when it comes to Will Stein and the Kentucky football program. Stein grew up a Kentucky fan and is one of the top young minds in college football. Kentucky fans were very happy with this hire from Barnhart.
The fan base is more split on Pope, but we here at Kentucky Wildcats On SI are still in the camp that he is going to have a successful tenure as the head coach of the Kentucky basketball program.

The one issue Big Blue Nation has with Barnhart right now is the contract with JMI. The Wildcats are locked down for over 10 years, and it seems like JMI is having a negative effect on Pope’s ability to recruit. Coach Pope and Barnhart have backed this deal with JMI, saying it isn’t affecting recruiting, but recruits seem to be all in on UK, then changing their mind due to contract issues.
This example of JMI hasn't had as much of an effect the football program as it has seemed to have on the basketball program.
If this contract with JMI ends up becoming an issue, it will forever have an effect on how BBN looks at Barnhart's tenure in Lexington, but if this problem goes away and his recent coaching hires work out, fans will look at his tenure more positively.
With the changing landscape of college athletics, Kentucky needs to hire a younger AD who is ready to deal with all of these changes. Kentucky needs to hit this hire out of the ballpark because a bad AD truly can set an athletic department back many years. It will be interesting to see if Kentucky hires someone already in the athletic department or if they go find someone from another school.
