Report: Date Set for 2023-24 Louisville-Kentucky Matchup

In this story:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - We now have our first scheduling details regarding the 2023-24 iteration of the annual Battle of the Bluegrass between the Louisville and Kentucky men's basketball programs.
The Cardinals will host the Wildcats at the KFC Yum! Center on Thursday, Dec. 21, according to CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein. A tip-off time and television designation were not reported.
This will be the earliest that Louisville and Kentucky will have faced off in the regular season since playing on the same date during the 2016-17 season also at the KFC Yum! Center. Louisville won that matchup, 73-70, and it is one of just three victories over Kentucky since 2010.
The Cardinals' non-conference schedule for the 2023-24 season is nearly complete. They will host UMBC, New Mexico State, Bellarmine, Kentucky, Pepperdine and Murray State; as well as travel to DePaul. Louisville will also play two games in the Empire Classic, with UConn, Indiana and Texas also participating.
Louisville will be looking for a massive rebound in their second year under head coach Kenny Payne. During his first season at the helm, the Cardinals went just 4-28 overall and 2-18 in ACC play, setting a new program record for most losses in a single season.
The 2023-24 roster will look radically different from that of last season's. Seven players entered the transfer portal, with only Mike James, J.J. Traynor, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and Emmanuel Okorafor being the scholarship returners for year two under Payne. Hercy Miller is also back, but has been reverted to a walk-on.
Payne and his staff are welcoming transfers Skyy Clark, Tre White and Danilo Jovanovich; 2023 prospects Dennis Evans, Trentyn Flowers, Kaleb Glenn, Curtis Williams Jr. and Ty-Laur Johnson; plus JUCO transfer Koron Davis. According to 247Sports, their high school recruiting class comes in at No. 5 nationally, while their transfer class is 27th.
