LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Former Louisville men’s basketball standout Montrezl Harrell is staying in the city of Brotherly Love.

The free agent forward/center has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The deal will be worth the veteran minimum and is fully guaranteed, according to Philly Voice's Kyle Neubeck.

The 6-foot-7, 240-pound big man signed a two-year, $5.2 million deal with the Sixers last offseason with the second year serving as a player option, but declined the option last month.

In his first year with Philadelphia and his eighth season in the NBA overall, Harrell fell well short of expectations. Playing in 57 games with seven starts, his 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds across 11.9 minutes per game were all the lowest since his first season in the league in 2015-16. He was mostly phased out of the rotation by the second half of the season.

The Tarboro, N.C. native has bounced around the league since being selected by the Houston Rockets with the No. 32 overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. After two years with the Rockets, he was traded to Los Angeles Clippers during the 2017 offseason and spent three seasons with that organization. He signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2020-21 season, was traded to the Washington Wizards ahead of the 2021-22 season, then was traded midway through that season to the Charlotte Hornets.

Harrell's best season came in 2019-20 with the Clippers, when he was named the Sixth Man of the Year. That season, he set career highs with 18.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game over 63 appearances and two starts. Harrell is averaging 12.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game over 515 career NBA games and 36 starts.

A three-year player for the Cardinals, Harrell averaged 15.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game during his 2014-15 junior campaign, winning the Karl Malone Award for the nation's top collegiate power forward. He finished his Louisville career as the program’s all-time dunk leader with 227, and as a National Champion in 2013.
