Report: Louisville Reaches Out to '23 PG, New Mexico State Decommit Darius Carr

The Class of 2023 guard decommitted from New Mexico State last month.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's basketball program still has a couple games left in their 2022-23 campaign, but head coach Kenny Payne is already working behind the scenes with roster construction for next season's squad.

The Cardinals have officially reached out to four-star Class of 2023 guard Darius Carr, according to 24/7 High School Hoops.

Carr originally committed to New Mexico State last October and signed with them during the early signing period, but asked to be released from his National Letter of Intent last month after the Aggies fired head coach Greg Heiar. Since re-opening his recruitment, Illinois, TCO and Fresno State have also reached out to him.

Louisville's interest in Carr was widely expected when he decommitted from New Mexico State. The Los Angeles (Calif.) Fairfax Senior point guard is ranked as the No. 105 player in the nation according to 247Sports in-house ranking.

This is also due to the fact that the Cardinals, once again, will be in desperate need of guard depth for next year's roster. All-ACC candidate El Ellis went through senior day activities, but could take advantage of his COVID waiver year. The only other scholarship guards on the roster - Fabio Basili and Hercy Miller - had minimal roles for Louisville this season.

So far this season, Ellis has averaged 18.0 points per game, but has been forced to play an average of 35.9 minutes per game. As for Basili and Miller, they combined to average just 15.5 minutes and 3.3 points per game. Among other factors, a lack a depth in the backcourt played a large role in Louisville going 4-26 heading into their regular season finale.

Louisville currently has three commitments in their 2023 recruiting class, although only one is a guard in JUCO product Koron Davis, and has yet to sign a National Letter of Intent. Four-star wings Kaleb Glenn and Curtis Williams Jr. both signed with the Cardinals last November.
