Report: Louisville Makes Top Eight for North Texas Transfer Tylor Perry

The former guard for the Mean Green was the 2023 Conference USA Player of the Year and NIT Most Outstanding Player.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville men's basketball program's continued efforts to search for a guard in the transfer portal could soon yield fruitful results.

The Cardinals are one of eight schools that former North Texas guard Tylor Perry is "prioritizing in his recruitment," according to College Basketball Report. Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Florida, Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are the other schools still in the running for his commitment.

The 5-foot-11, 182-pound shooting guard started all 36 games for North Texas last season, and was the driving force behind arguably the most successful season in Mean Green history. He took home Conference-USA Player of the Year honors after averaging a team-best 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, while also shooting 43.7 percent from the field and 41.3 percent on three-point attempts, the latter of which was good for 18th in Division I.

North Texas finished the 2022-23 season with a 31-7 mark for the most wins in school history, while also capturing the 2023 NIT championship. Perry averaged 20.6 points and 4.8 rebounds during their NIT run, earning the honor of 2023 NIT Most Outstanding Player.

The Fort Coffee, Okla. native spent his first two years in college in the JUCO ranks, playing for Coffeyville C.C. and leading them to an NJCAA Championship in 2021 as a sophomore. In his first season with North Texas during the 2021-22 season as junior, he averaged 13.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 31 games and a single start.

Louisville has been busy this offseason when it comes to reaching out to transfer portal targets, especially among those in the backcourt. With three scholarships still open for the 2023-24 season, Illinois transfer Skyy Clark and JUCO prospect Koron Davis are the only true guards currently on Louisville's roster.

The Cardinals went just 4-28 this past season in their first year under head coach Kenny Payne, and roster management has been in full swing since the end of their season. Louisville has seen seven players enter the transfer portal, including leading scorer El Ellis. Only Mike James, J.J. Traynor, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield and Emmanuel Okorafor are returning.

Conversely, Payne and his staff have been hard at work attempting to bring in fresh talent for next season. On top of Clark and Davis, they are set to bring in five-star 2023 center Dennis Evans, five-star 2023 reclass guard/forward Trentyn Flowers, and four-star wings Kaleb Glenn and Curtis Williams Jr.

Louisville's five-man recruiting 2023 class, which is the first full cycle for Payne, ranks as the No. 5 class in the nation according to 247Sports. Despite having just one transfer commitment in Clark, their transfer class comes in at No. 26 in the nation also by 247Sports. All six of the Cardinals' newcomers up to this point have signed National Letters of Intent.
