Louisville Soccer Secures 3-2 Comeback Win at Kentucky

It doesn’t matter what sport, venue, time of year of stakes. When Louisville and Kentucky get together it’s going to be entertaining and bad blood is sure to boil over. Monday night’s early season soccer matchup between the Cats and the Cards did not disappoint.

In front of a sold-out crowd at the Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Louisville came back from a two-goal halftime deficit to claim the 3-2 victory in the rivalry matchup. The second half saw a combined seven yellow cards.

Transfer midfielder Giacomo Zizza continued his hot start to his Cardinal’s career finding the back of the net at the 89:52 mark in the second half to give the Cards their first lead of the night and ultimately the win. There is no extra time in the college game.

The last-minute goal was Zizza’s second goal of the night, also scoring the equalizer in the 82nd minute. The Cards improve to 2-0 on the season, beating IU Indy in the opener, where Zizza scored both goals. He transferred to The Ville from Lehigh, where he was First Team All-Patriot League.

Kentucky jumped out 2-0 in the first half with a goal in the 17th minute by Michael Lee & 30th minute by Yasha Schaerer. Louisville would draw within 2-1 on a penalty kick by Andres Escuerdo in the 56th minute.

Louisville goalkeeper Nathaniel Abraham had two saves, Kentucky keeper Ben Rasmussen had eight. Louisville had 21 shots (9 on goal), to Kentucky’s 14 (4 on goal). Each team committed thirteen fouls and Louisville drew eight corner kicks to Kentucky’s seven.

Louisville coach John Michael Hayden improves to 4-3-1 against the Cats, while the all-time series is now tied 18-18-6. Louisville needed a goal in the 89th minute last season at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium to preserve a 2-2 tie.

Next up for the Cards will be a Thursday night tilt with Lipscomb. Kickoff is at 6 pm & it is free to the public.
