7th Inning Stretch: Battle of the Bluegrass (Week 11)

Fresh off of a winless week, the Cardinals now have the daunting task of facing two highly-ranked opponents, including their arch rival.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Louisville baseball program that has experienced a lot of highs and lows over the last month-plus experienced nothing but lows this past week.

The Cardinals (26-13, 8-10 ACC) were unable to capture a single win last week, dropping their midweek contest at Indiana and getting swept at Duke. The series against the Blue Devils was particularly egregious, giving up late rallies in all three games including two walk-offs.

All of a sudden, things are trending in a very bad direction for Louisville. A program that opened up the year at 16-1 and ranked as high as the No. 2 team in the country has now dropped 12 of their last 22 since, and only won two of their six ACC series.

The Cardinals' inconsistencies at the plate has been the main cause to this problem as of late, but now the bullpen seems to be struggling mightily at times. This was once a sure-fire NCAA Tournament team that was in the thick of potential super regional hosting rights. Now? It's not inconceivable that, if things continue on this trend, they might not make the Big Dance at all for the second time in three years.

Things don't get any easier, either. This next week has no days off, with Louisville set to travel to Lexington for the road leg of their annual home-and-home series against Kentucky, then will return home to host Miami. Both are top-20 squads, and wins against them would do wonders in terms of getting their season back on track.

They just have to win.
