LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Continuing with their three-game top-20 set against Miami, the Louisville baseball program was able to rebound from their series-opening loss the night before, earning a decisive 11-0 win Friday night to even the series.
The Cardinals (28-14, 9-11 ACC) earn their first shutout win in ACC play since a 5-0 decision against Boston College on Mar, 13. 2021. The series with the Hurricanes (27-16, 13-10 ACC) now heads to the rubber match, where Louisville will look to win their first ACC series since sweeping BC on Apr. 6-8.
Jack Payton (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Brandon Anderson (2-5, HR, 2 RBI) had multi-hit and multi-RBI days, with the trio and Eddie King Jr. (2-5, HR, RBI, 2B) each launching home runs. Ryan McCoy (1-4, 2 RBI, BB) also had a multi-RBI outing, and six Cardinals had multiple hits.
Louisville wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, putting up a four-spot in the second inning. Anderson and King led off the frame with back-to-back home runs, then McCoy added a two-run single.
The Cardinals didn't take their foot off the gas, putting up two-spots in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, plus a single run in the eighth. Logan Beard (1-2, RBI, 2B, BB) struck an RBI double and Gavin Kilen (2-4, RBI, BB) tallied an RBI single in the fourth, Payton launched a two-run homer in the sixth, then Isaac Humphrey (2-4, RBI, 3B) hit an RBI triple and Tyeler Hawkins (1-1, RBI) collected an RBI single in the seventh. Anderson capped off the scoring efforts with an RBI single in the eighth.
Ryan Hawks (4.2 IP, 8 K, 2 BB, 8 H) posted his first scoreless start since Mar. 3 against Texas A&M, but Miami certainly had their chances against him. He came within one strikeout of tying his career-high, but also tied his career-high in hits allowed, creating two-runner jams in the first and fourth and bases loaded jams in the third and fifth.
The latter eventually led to an early exit, but Kayden Campbell (1.1 IP, 1 K, 1 H) picked up the slack. He got the strikeout to end the fifth, and followed that up with a scoreless sixth. Kade Grundy (3.0 IP, 4 K, 1 BB, 2 H) then took over down the stretch to keep the Canes off the board and preserve the shutout.
Next up for Louisville, they'll try and capture their series against Miami in the game three rubber match. First pitch is slated for Saturday, Apr. 29 at 1:00 p.m. EST, and will be televised on ACC Network Extra and broadcast on 93.9 The Ville.
