Lane Kiffin's first season as head coach of LSU is approaching its most important stretch, as the Tigers prepare for four consecutive games against Alabama, Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas to close out the regular season.

After an eventful first eight games, LSU enters November with a 6-2 overall record and a 3-2 mark in SEC play, sitting at 14 in the initial College Football Playoff poll.

While Kiffin has already experienced both the highs and lows of his first season in Baton Rouge, the final four games could ultimately determine how his debut season is remembered.

However, the importance of the remaining schedule goes beyond wins and losses. For Kiffin and his coaching staff, the final month of the season will provide an opportunity to evaluate how the roster holds up against some of the SEC's most challenging competition and what areas of the program still need improvement.

In his first season, Kiffin has had the task of building a roster capable of competing in the SEC while implementing his own culture and identity in Baton Rouge.

Through eight games, the Tigers have experienced a little bit of everything. LSU opened the season with a dominant win over Clemson before suffering a loss to Ole Miss. They then followed that with another dominant performance against Texas A&M, before dropping a heartbreaker to Kentucky.

The Tigers responded with consecutive victories over Mississippi State and Auburn. Now, LSU will have little room for error as it enters the final stretch of its schedule.

Alabama will be the first challenge, traveling to Baton Rouge on Nov. 7 for a matchup inside Tiger Stadium. The Tigers will then host Texas on Nov. 14 before traveling to Knoxville to face Tennessee on Nov. 21. LSU will close out the regular season against Arkansas on Nov. 28.

Each matchup presents a different challenge, and how LSU responds will provide a better indication of where the program stands heading into the offseason.

Roster Construction Will Be Just as Important as the Results

While the final four games will have a significant impact on LSU's postseason outlook, they will also provide Kiffin with an opportunity to see how his roster performs against some of the best competition in the SEC.

Kiffin made significant changes to the roster following his arrival in Baton Rouge, bringing in close to 40 transfers and more than a dozen high school signees. In total, 54 new players were on the field when LSU opened spring practice in March.

The approach allowed Kiffin to bring in established talent and address several areas of need in a short amount of time. However, building a roster through the transfer portal also presents a different set of challenges, particularly when it comes to developing chemistry and establishing depth.

Kiffin acknowledged those challenges during spring practice, saying LSU would have quality front-linetalentbut could still experience depth issues.

That is where the final month of the season becomes especially important.

Against Alabama, Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas, LSU will have to rely on more than just its starting lineup. Injuries, fatigue and the physical toll of the first eight weeks could test the depth of the roster.

For Kiffin, seeing which players can consistently perform against high-level competition will be valuable information heading into the offseason.

LSU's Long-Term Success Will Depend on More Than the Transfer Portal

There is no question that Kiffin has brought a different approach to roster construction at LSU. His first transfer class gave the Tigers an influx of talent, and the early results have shown that the program is capable of competing at a high level.

However, the bigger question moving forward is whether LSU can sustain that level of talent year after year.

The transfer portal provides programs with an opportunity to address immediate needs, but building a consistent winner requires more than bringing in experienced players every offseason. Developing high school recruits, retaining key contributors and establishing reliable depth will all play a role in determining how successful Kiffin's tenure becomes.

The final four games will not answer every question about the long-term direction of LSU football, but they should provide a better understanding of what the program currently has and what it still needs.

The key distinction is that a successful first season and a sustainable program are not necessarily the same thing. Kiffin can use the remaining schedule to evaluate both, as LSU looks to establish itself as a consistent contender in the SEC.

Regardless of how the Tigers finish the season, the games against Alabama, Texas, Tennessee and Arkansas will provide an important measuring stick for the direction of the program.

For Kiffin, the goal is not simply to put together a successful first season in Baton Rouge, but to build a roster capable of competing for championships in the years to come.

The final month could determine how his first season is remembered, but what it reveals about LSU's roster and its ability to sustain success could ultimately be even more important.
