LSU Has a Fascinating Decision to Make at Running Back

LSU's inability to run the ball played a major role in a disappointing 2025 season. The Tigers averaged 104 rushing yards per game, which ranked last in the SEC. As a result, the offense never found its footing and it became a disastrous year for that side of the ball.

In fact, LSU never had a 100-yard rusher last season. You have to go back to October 19, 2024, to find a player who eclipsed that mark. Lane Kiffin is hoping to fix that with a revamped offense.

Kiffin brought in seven running backs through the transfer portal, but Wisconsin transfer Dilin Jones has stood out the most during fall camp. With Caden Durham and Harlem Berry back in the mix, that leaves an interesting decision for the coaching staff.

Will There Be a Clear Lead Back This Season?

Jones handled first-team reps on day one, but that doesn't guarantee he'll be the starter. Kiffin discussed the running back situation after practice.

"Dilin's done great. Really has had a great week too and has kind of taken off from where he did in the spring, so we're really pleased with that," Kiffin said per Jerit Roser. "And you say motivate the veterans [Berry and Durham], which I get, but they're not that old, the two guys...So they still have a lot of work to do and can improve. So we're pleased where they're at now, but we wanna push 'em more."

It seems a running back committee could be brewing. Durham and Berry handled identical carries last season and produced similar numbers. With an improved offensive line, they should have more room to operate.

It was never a question about potential with this duo, but rather finding the right system to thrive in. They may have hit the jackpot with Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.

The Decision at Running Back

Ultimately, we believe Kiffin will pivot to Jones and Berry as the lead backs this season. Kiffin has had impressive running backs over the last few seasons (Kewan Lacy and Quinshon Judkins). Running the ball has become a staple during his coaching career.

Jones has impressed for a reason. He's a physical, downhill back who can grind out the tough yards. The early returns have favored the transfer running back, and he could be the go-to player at the goal line.

Berry thrived as best he could in an offense that wasn't doing him any favors. Tigers fans should expect Berry to shine this season and see his full potential unlocked.
