LSU vs. Alabama Is Becoming a Defining Moment for Lane Kiffin

LSU has found its footing with consecutive SEC victories, but Alabama will provide Lane Kiffin with his biggest opportunity yet to prove the Tigers belong among the conference's elite.

In this story:

Lane Kiffin has LSU football moving in the right direction, but the Tigers' upcoming matchup against Alabama could reveal just how much progress his program has actually made.

Following consecutive victories over Mississippi State and Auburn, LSU enters its bye week at 6-2 with renewed confidence. The Tigers have outscored their last two opponents 69-17, displaying an offensive identity that was largely absent earlier in the season.

However, two convincing victories cannot erase the inconsistencies that plagued LSU through its first six games.

Alabama represents something different. For Kiffin, the Nov. 7 matchup is an opportunity to prove his program's apparent progress is concrete.

Progress Is Evident, but the Standard Is Higher

LSU's recent turnaround has been impressive, particularly following its disappointing overtime loss to Kentucky.

The Tigers shut out Mississippi State 31-0 before traveling to Auburn and delivering a dominant 38-17 victory, snapping an eight-game SEC road losing streak.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt completed 32 of 45 passes for 387 yards and three touchdowns against Auburn, while LSU's defense held the opposition to just 17 points.

Lane Kiffin Has Restored Something LSU Football Was Desperately Missing, and the Tigers have finally fully begun displaying the aggressive offensive approach that helped establish Kiffin's reputation.

Still, Alabama presents a considerably different challenge.

The Crimson Tide will test LSU's ability to protect the football, sustain offensive drives and execute when opportunities become limited.

Those areas could determine whether LSU's recent improvement represents genuine development or simply a productive two-game stretch.

Kiffin Knows What Still Needs Improvement

Despite LSU's recent success, Kiffin has acknowledged that his team remains far from a finished product.

"We really focused a lot on red zone starting two weeks ago, and that's really paid off for us," Kiffin said. "So you know just looking at areas (to improve on), one would be turnover margin."

That concern becomes particularly significant against Alabama, where costly mistakes could quickly erase the progress LSU has made.

Kiffin has also emphasized the importance of avoiding complacency following impressive victories.

"No, that's a real thing. Relief syndrome is real," Kiffin said while discussing Auburn's upset of Georgia.

"You start to be told how great you are when you have those wins," Kiffin added.

Now, his own team faces that challenge.

Alabama Offers another Chance for LSU to prove themselves

Lane Kiffin Was Hired to Beat Teams Like Alabama, and expectations surrounding Kiffin's arrival extend beyond winning games against struggling conference opponents.

LSU hired Kiffin to compete for SEC championships and establish itself as a consistent College Football Playoff contender.

A victory over Alabama would provide his strongest evidence yet that the Tigers are approaching that standard.

With Texas and Tennessee still awaiting LSU, the Tigers will have additional opportunities to establish themselves against elite competition.

Two victories have given Kiffin's program momentum. Alabama will help determine whether that momentum is developing into something sustainable.

The Tigers have shown they can win convincingly. Now, they must prove they can compete consistently against the programs they were built to challenge.
