A New Era Of Miami Hurricanes Baseball Is Among Us With J.D. Arteaga Leading The Way

A Preview Of What's To Come As Miami Turns The Page To The Next Chapter With J.D. Arteaga Taking Over

The University of Miami's baseball season came to a disappointing end last June as they went 2-2 at Regionals and lost to the Texas Longhorns to cap off yet another season of not making it out of the Regionals.

With that, Miami decided it was time to seek change as long time coach Gino DiMare, who spent 24 total season with the Hurricanes on the staff (five seasons as head coach) decided to step down.

When it came time to hire the replacement, Miami stayed in-house and promoted pitching coach J.D. Arteaga to head coach this past summer. Arteaga, much like DiMare, played for Miami and has been serving on the coaching staff for over two decades. DiMare's exit also saw Miami losing some serious talent, as Yohandy Morales, Andrew Walters and C.J. Kayfus were among notable departures via the MLB Draft.

Now in the head coaching role, Coach Arteaga has already made some changes in the way they'll do things going forward. One of those was base running, as he said it's become a major emphasis in their practices as they start every practice with base running drills.

Additionally, he's ben able to bring on two baseball analytics specialists (Peter Amalbert and Jack Olszewski) for the team, something that has been previously handled by the assistant coaches. Coach Arteaga understands that the game is rapidly evolving, and wants to be on the forefront of it.

As for players to watch out for this coming season one of the popular names discussed was freshman Daniel Cuvet, who was selected in the 17th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates but opted to go to Miami to improve his stock.

Cuvet's power was praised by Coach Arteaga and his teammate Dorian Gonzalez Jr., as the number one overall third baseman in the Class of 2023 (per Perfect Game) has the frame to do so at 6-foot 3 and 237 pounds.

Looking forward to opening day, Miami plays host to NJIT on February 16th and will stay home for nearly the first month of the season before a one-game road trip up to Boca Raton to face the Florida Atlantic Owls. Miami's marquee matchup with the Florida Gators is scheduled from March 1st to the 3rd.

Miami enters the season unranked in the D1Baseball preseason rankings.
