These 11 a.m. kickoffs aren't for the weak.

As the undisputed winner of a wild Week 7 across the college football landscape, the Hurricanes will now look to keep the momentum rolling against a Pittsburgh team that enters the matchup raring to start a problem.

There's quite a lot of pride on the line here, though. This is the first time Miami has played as the No. 1-ranked team in the country in nearly 25 years, and it's looking to keep things where they are, but an early kickoff never bodes well for those plans. However, there's a silver lining: Pitt enters the matchup reeling after losing its starting quarterback earlier in the year and falling to Boston College last week.

To say Pitt has struggled to move the ball since Mason Heintschel went down would be an understatement, but to the Panthers' credit, the Pitt defense has been as stiff as any in the country. Miami will need to put points up early and often to counter Pitt's stout run defense. Luckily, Miami has the tools to do just that.

This is Game Central for Week 8 of the 2026 Miami Hurricanes football season.

Keys to the Game: Pitt at No. 1 Miami

The biggest question mark this week lies with the Miami offensive line. Last week, Florida State routinely got to Darian Mensah and created pressure. This week, while it isn't a rivalry matchup, the Pitt defensive line will look to exploit those holes that FSU found just one week ago.

Miami has dealt its share of injuries on the line of scrimmage, but with the talent in that room, they have to handle the blitzes Pitt throws their way. The Panthers send extra rushers on about 40% of their defensive snaps and can get exotic with their blitzes. Those pickups will require constant communication and effort, and Mensah needs a clean pocket to do his job.

Pitt knows Miami will try to nickel and dime its way down the field and let its playmakers do their job in space to make big gains. The game plan will be relatively simple: apply pressure, hope it gets home, and try to force turnovers.

On the flip side of that conversation, the Pitt offense relies heavily on downfield routes that take time to develop. The offensive line has to hold up for the entire system to work. That doesn't bode well against a Miami team that has finally hit its stride in replacing last year's group as a whole.

On paper, in just about every head-to-head matchup in this game, Miami has the edge. If the No. 1 team in the country shows up at 11 a.m., the Hurricanes have a great opportunity to improve their record and return to playing under the Hard Rock Stadium lights next week.
