Slowly but surely, Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May is assembling his roster ahead of the 2024-25 season. That effort received a boost on Thursday when U-M guard George Washington III withdrew his name from the transfer portal, indicating a return to Ann Arbor for next season.

In total, Washington III was in the transfer portal for less than a month, originally entering his name into the mix on March 18, before deciding on another season at Michigan— this time with a new coach in charge.

When Dusty May was introduced as Michigan’s new coach on March 24, Washington was in attendance for the press conference, which at the time seemed to be a peculiar move for a player freshly entering the transfer portal. However, May widely impressed onlookers during his opening presser, and one can assume Washington III felt similarly after withdrawing his name from the portal earlier today.

Last season, the 6-2, 170-pounder contributed off the bench during his 22 games, recording a career-high 10 points against Purdue on Jan. 23. Washington III also shot 85% from the foul line a season ago, and mainly operates as a slasher who can shoot from outside but is most successful around the rim. At this juncture, Michigan needs fill out its roster as quickly as possible, so Washington’s return to the Wolverines will be much welcomed.

How should Dusty May go about filling up his roster? Should he pursue mostly transfer portal players or focus more on high school recruits? Let us know and follow @EricJRutter on Twitter for more Wolverine Digest updates.
