Make Your Pick: Michigan at Nebraska

For the first time in 2023, Michigan is on the road. The Wolverines will take on Nebraska in Lincoln tomorrow afternoon.

Michigan has gotten to 4-0 with relative ease and is expected to be 5-0 after this weekend, However, Nebraska can be a tough place to play and new Huskers head coach Matt Rhule would love nothing more than to pick up a huge statement win over Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines early in his tenure. According to Vegas, Michigan should win handily, but that' why the games are played. Here's how we see it...

Michigan made it through the first four weeks of the season with a perfect 4-0 record at home. In arguably the biggest challenge of the season so far, the Wolverines travel to Lincoln to face a Cornhusker team looking to go a game above .500.

Nebraska has put together one of the top rushing offenses in the country and they're even better defensively when it comes to stopping the run. Expect the Wolverines to lean heavily on JJ McCarthy and the passing game early but ultimately the Michigan rushing attack will prove to be too much for Nebraska to contain down the stretch. Expect another convincing win for Michigan.

Michigan is supposed to beat Nebraska pretty easily, but we've seen the much better Wolverines struggle with inferior opponents on the road before. Away games in college football can get squirrelly in a hurry and Nebraska does have a few things going for it.

First of all, Matt Rhule and his players will be treating this game like their Super Bowl. Earlier this year, a Nebraska player said that they approach every team like they're preparing to play against Michigan, essentially saying that U-M is the standard. As back-to-back defending Big Champs, they are, and that means they'll get everyone's best shot.

Secondly, Nebraska is very good at running the ball (No. 6 nationally) and stopping the run (No. 2 nationally). Those things usually translate no matter the opponent or the location. Luckily for Nebraska, they're playing at home. Unluckily for Nebraska, they'll be facing Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards, along with JJ McCarthy as ball carriers. The Wolverines have a tough group to stop, but a capable Nebraska unit will likely take all it can from U-M's first three or four opponents to see how to slow down the charge.

With all of that said, Michigan should still win this game. I actually think it's going to be very similar to the first four games in term of pace, control in favor of Michigan and final score.

This is going to be Michigan’s first road test of the season and it’s never easy playing at Memorial Stadium. Regardless if Nebraska is 0-4, 4-0, or 2-2, the fan base is ready to roll and will be loud. While it may take a few series for the Wolverines to get going, I look for Michigan to really control the game. The Huskers have the 127th-ranked passing attack in the country, so Michigan should be able to hone in on the Huskers’ run game. And on the flip side, Nebraska may have the No. 2 rushing defense, the Huskers have the 103rd-ranked passing defense. JJ McCarthy should be able to have his way with the Nebraska secondary which will open up he run game for Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards. I think Michigan finally covers a spread here.
