The transfer portal window officially opens on Dec. 4, but players are able to enter the portal now and garner offers.

Michigan has been extremely active in the transfer portal over the past couple of seasons. Last year, the Wolverines went out and got nine transfers and every one of them played this season -- most making a significant impact.

While it's still early looking into the upcoming transfer cycle, it appears Michigan might be active once again.

The Wolverines, along with plenty of other schools, have offered Penn DT Joey Slackman.

The 6-foot-4, 300-pound DT is the No. 1 ranked transfer target by 247Sports as of this writing. Not just on the defensive side of the ball, but the best there is in the portal.

Slackman originally committed to Penn as a wrestler, but once the COVID-19 pandemic occurred and Penn took away athletics in 2020-21 -- he made the switch to football and made the most of it.

In 2021, Slackman played in nine games recording 16 tackles, 3.5 TFLs, and 2.5 sacks. And that was only the start. In 2022, Slackman improved his numbers with 49 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, and 4.5 sacks.

This season, in 2023, Slackman registered a 90.1 PFF grade along with 50 tackles, 12 TFLs, and four sacks. He is going to be one of the most sought-after players in the portal this season and with the success Michigan has had in recent years developing defensive linemen, it could be a good match.

Slackman told 247Sports that he wanted to go somewhere where he could continue to develop, use his Master's degree, and have an eye toward the NFL.
