There isn't much intrigue when it comes to college football spring games these days. Outside of having the opportunity to see some new faces on the roster compete, the games themselves are little more than glorified practices.

That could all change with a new idea proposed by Auburn head football coach, Hugh Freeze.

According to Freeze, spring games could be much more impactful by having a scrimmage between two in-state programs. These events could be used to raise money for various charities, and would also create a more interesting experience for fans. Freeze also suggests that it would help cut the possibility of injuries in half, given that each team would only have 11 players from each team on the field at a time (as opposed to 22 players from the same team on the field during a typical spring game).

"Let Alabama play Troy and we play UAB, or vice versa," Freeze said. "People will come see that.

"I just think it would be great for the sport, I think it would be awesome. The NFL gets to scrimmage against others, high schools get to scrimmage against each other. For the life of me, I don't understand why we haven't gotten to that point where we can pull that off."

When asked about Freeze's idea, Alabama head coach Nick Saban said he would also be open to an inter-squad scrimmage.

"I didn't know anything about that, (but) we're always interested in helping people any way that we can. If that's the purpose of what they're doing, that's certainly a good thing," Saban said.. "We try to do a lot of things to create opportunities for people in our foundation and we'll continue to do that. If there's something we could do along those lines in the spring game that would be helpful to somebody, I think it's a great idea."
