Jim Harbaugh On NCAA Investigation: 'I Was Very Forthright In My Statement'

Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media on Monday for the first time since the NCAA investigation into sign-stealing was announced.

Michigan head football coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media on Monday for the first time since the NCAA investigation into sign-stealing was announced. As is often the case with matters such as this, Harbaugh made it clear early on that he was unable to discuss details surrounding the current NCAA investigation.

Harbaugh did, however, refute a report by the Wall State Journal that claimed the University of Michigan had "rescinded" a recent contract offer.

I wouldn't say that's accurate, no. And the University has a policy on contracts and publicly talking about them."

Harbaugh was then asked a series of questions about the NCAA investigation, including the impact it could have on his coaching legacy at the University of Michigan.

"The team is refreshed, I'm refreshed," Harbaugh said. "Opportunity to spend time with the families after a pretty good week of practice last week, got some things done. We're in an onward mode. So to answer your question specifically, it's a one-track mind that I'm modeling, and I see it throughout the program."

When asked about whether or not it was a head coaches responsibility to know everything that's happening within the program, Harbaugh was brief in his response.

"I think that question probably answers itself. I was forthright with the statement right away, but you're asking...yeah, I'll just leave it at that."

The statement Harbaugh is referring to is one that he put out shortly after news of the NCAA investigation became public knowledge.

"I want to make it clear that I, and my staff, will fully cooperate with the investigation into this matter. I do not have any knowledge or information regarding the University of Michigan football program illegally stealing signals, nor have I directed any staff member or others to participate in an off-campus scouting assignment. I have no awareness of anyone on our staff having done that or having directed that action. I do not condone or tolerate anyone doing anything illegal or against NCAA rules. No matter what program or organization that I have led throughout my career, my instructions and awareness of how we scout opponents have always been firmly within the rules. Pursuant to NCAA rules, I will not be able to comment further while this investigation takes place."

Near the end of his press conference, Harbaugh was asked whether or not he had a message for Michigan fans who are concerned about the NCAA investigation.

"Everybody's welcome to their opinion. I think the people that know us the most think the most of us."
