Answering Your Michigan State Basketball Questions and Emails...

Hondo, what do you think will happen to Eron Harris and Alvin Ellis III with their alcohol legal issues? I know Izzo hasn’t said, I’m just wondering what you think. Carol

I think the biggest for Harris would be losing the Italy trip and maybe two games to start the season and the biggest for Ellis would be losing the Italy trip. Again that is ONLY opinion.

Hondo, with Ellis being in Izzo’s doghouse already, what was he thinking to add legal issues to it? Kent Bryson

He wasn’t.

Hondo, with Deyonta Davis now here what is his biggest weakness and do you think he is a one and done? Brenda Rhaney

First, I was told by two different players, “He is going to have some issues with Iz (Coach Izzo) because he is so quiet. Coach wants you to communicate and he don’t talk.” That is going to be his biggest adjustment. I do not think that he is a one and done player.

Hondo, can Zel making a U.S. team impact recruiting? Will, Sturgis

It can’t hurt. Day Day making the Olympic team would be bigger simply because the Olympics is a bigger stage, but I sure wish Zel well. Great kid.

Hondo, can Tum Tum become a Scott Skiles type player? Mark H.

No, he isn’t. He is faster, but not anywhere near as prolific of a scorer. I don’t think you can compare the two. They are totally different talent wise. I would suggest you take a different angle and evaluate if he can be as big of an impact player, and I say for sure on that.

Hondo, with Izzo doing so well in recruiting do you think he is doing anything different? Tracy

No, he isn’t. He is just getting in on some guys that he wasn’t recently. When MSU had a couple years of struggle, it didn’t mean he worked less or that he is working harder now. Recruiting is VERY cyclical.

Hondo, do you think it is wrong of Izzo to bemoan all the transfers, but constantly go after them? Pete

Not at all. It is part of the game. He would love to change it, but until it changes, he gets paid multi millions to have MSU competing every year and he has to. I applaud him for doing something he doesn’t embrace.

Hondo, I have a class with a source who claims that Marvin Clark is not well liked by his teammates. What do you think? Scott Thomas

Your source is an idiot. Marv is loved, not just by his teammates but by everyone who knows him.

Hondo, Izzo said that he thinks guys are playing too much basketball. Said he wanted guys to get away from the game. Then Denzel goes on to play for the country. Do you think he did that without Izzo’s blessing? Darrell P.

No, he did not. Izzo loves it when Spartans play for America.

Hondo, I am worried about Denzel Valentine playing for team USA and then going to Italy. Seems like that is a lot of wear on the tires? Is that legitimate? Jason

Legitimate concern for sure. That is a lot of basketball, but these are good miles on Zel’s tread and Izzo is smart.

Hondo, I know teams like to take vacations at the schools expense and go beat club teams overseas by 40, but can they gain anything really? Is it just more of a recruiting tool to sell we not only make Final Fours but here you also get a European vacation? Fred

First of all, this trip is not like most schools where they go and beat club teams by 40. In fact, MSU may very well lose some games, as they are playing national teams; top tier teams. Secondly, you get the real minutes of your guys playing together and learning each other on the court and build chemistry off. I am not always a fan of oversea summer trips, but this is brilliant the way they are doing it.

Hondo, can you give me a name of a guy that perhaps you don’t think people are talking enough about that you expect big things from for Izzo this year? Vic Painter

Javon Bess. Great player. Great kid. He is immensely talented and on a mission.
