Michigan State's Big Ten opponents set for 2023-24 basketball season

In this story:
The Big Ten Conference has announced its matchups for the 2023-24 men's college basketball season, and we now know who Michigan State will face at home, on the road and which opponents the Spartans will face twice.
As per usual, Michigan State will face archrival Michigan twice during the regular season, once in East Lansing and once in Ann Arbor. The other six Big Ten opponents that the Spartans will play a home-and-home against are Maryland, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Penn State and Wisconsin.
Michigan State will also welcome Iowa, Ohio State and Rutgers to the Breslin Center, but MSU will not make return trips to Iowa City, Columbus or Piscataway.
The Spartans will travel to Indiana, Nebraska and Purdue but won't get the benefit of facing any of those three opponents in East Lansing.

It's a tough draw for Michigan State in having to play both Indiana schools on the road only, particularly Purdue. The Boilermakers won the Big Ten regular season championship by three games in 2022-23, and will be considered the favorite to win the league again next season if starting center Zach Edey withdraws his name from the 2023 NBA Draft.
With that said, the Spartans appear to be the top challenger for the defending Big Ten champions. Michigan State will lose starting power forward Joey Hauser (eligibility) and reserve wing Pierre Brooks (transfer) from last year's squad, and they await a final decision from starting guard Jaden Akins, who submitted his name into the 2023 NBA Draft earlier this week.
However, every other member of MSU's 2022-23 roster is expected back, and the Spartans also add the nation's No. 3 recruiting class to their squad this summer. Expectations are that the Spartans will be a top contender both in the Big Ten and nationally in 2023-24.
Michigan State has not beaten Purdue at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette since 2014, having lost six in a row on the road against the Boilermakers. The Spartans are also 7-13 at Indiana's Assembly Hall since 2000.
Dates and times for Michigan State's 2023-24 conference schedule will be determined at a later date by the Big Ten.
