Michigan State football adds final piece to 2023 recruiting class

The Spartans added a 16th and final signee for the 2023 recruiting cycle on National Signing Day...

Michigan State added a final piece to its 2023 recruiting class on the traditional "National Signing Day" when 3-star Lake Wales (Fla.) High School safety Philipp Davis announced he would sign with the Spartans.

With the addition of Davis, Michigan State is now up to 16 prospects in the '23 class, with the other 15 prospects each signing with the Spartans during the "early" signing period in December.

Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing in at 180 pounds, Davis has a good frame for Michigan State secondary coach Harlon Barnett to work with. Davis is ranked No. 1130 overall player, the No. 103 safety and No. 160 player from the state of Florida in his class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. His only other FBS offer came from the University of Toledo.

While Michigan State signed a low number of prospects for the 2023 recruiting cycle, the Spartans made up for that by landing one of the most talented classes in program history. MSU signed eight four-star players in the class, one behind the program record set in 2016.

Ranked No. 23 in the country, Michigan State's 2023 class is fourth-best in the Big Ten behind Ohio State (No. 5), Penn State (No. 13) and Michigan (No. 18). However, the Spartans edged the Wolverines in average player rating for the class.
