It was not a good night for the Michigan State Spartans. It was a great night for Terrapin true freshman point guard Melo Trimble who scored 24 points and added three assists. He also left Spartan true freshman point guard Tum Tum Nairn at the top of the key with broken ankles that looked more like Allen Iverson than a B1G rookie. That is a recipe for another Maryland drubbing of the Spartans 75-59.

Izzo said of the contest, "One of the poorer performances by a Michigan State team. We were awful. We didn't make layups. We didn't guard. And I thought one of the better performances by the Maryland team."

Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon took a much different angle, “I'm really proud of my team. That's what I've been waiting for. I don't think we've played our best basketball lately and our guys stepped up today and really played well.”

Izzo was so disgusted he went as far as saying, “Very disappointing and every time I think we're taking two steps forward, we take one step back.” Adding, “That was an inept performance by us on a big stage. That doesn't happen very often, and that falls on me."

Celebrated last week with B1G player of the week accolades Travis Trice only scored five points in the contest and didn’t score his first points until there was barely 13 minutes left in the game. He said, “I’ve still got to find a way to get it done. We didn't and I didn't."

Spartan big man Matt Costello said, “Everybody has to pick up their part."

Izzo said about Trice and Dawson’s poor night, “We missed a number of layups and then I think they took our two guards out of it, or we took ourselves out of it," He added to his analysis that "We really struggled, I mean you go 3-for-14 or whatever we went from the line. You miss, like I said, I don't know how many layups. At one time it was six layups. I'm not talking short jump shots. I mean, you're not gonna beat a good team when you do stuff like that.”

The Spartans record falls to 12-6, (3-2) but they get no time to lick their wounds. They turn right around and host Penn State at the Breslin Center on Wednesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 PM.
