Shame on the Big Ten...This Is Just Stupid!
There are certain things that set college basketball apart from professional basketball, from a fans perspective. College basketball has student cheering sections, cheerleaders, and perhaps most notably rivalries. The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry has proved to be huge in the state of Michigan; it divides friends, families, and co-workers. So why on Earth are these two teams only playing once this season?

 Rivalry games like this fuel collegiate athletics; they are what keep the fans passionate and on fire for their favorite teams. Cheering for the Spartans is fun, and its even more fun against Michigan. To only have one game between these two teams is tantamount to extinguishing the fire the fans have for basketball.

 When the Big Ten Conference put its schedule together apparently they didn’t value the rivalry as much as the fans of each team, and they are the ones that truly lose out. Sorry Izzone no Wolverines for you this year, unless you make the trip to Ann Arbor. Fans want to see their rivals, and it’s unfair of the Big Ten to take that away. Â

 Not only is it unfair to the fans, its unfair to the teams. Why do the Spartans not get a chance to protect their home court? And if, by some miracle, Michigan were to win the Big Ten, would it be fair to the rest of the league when they only had to play MSU once, and at home? No, it’s not fair. A balanced schedule would ensure fairness in play. If each team plays each other twice then at the end of the season each team has run the race, and there will be a clear cut winner. Â

The Big Ten should reevaluate the way they make their schedules. They should consider the integrity of the game; they should seek a true champion who has run the entire gauntlet of a Big Ten season. More than that though they should consider the fans, consider the students and others that can’t travel to see a Michigan-Michigan State game.Â
