Spartans Get Win Over Texas Arlington and Lucas Plays Well

It isn’t easy being green is the old saying and the Spartan basketball team proved it once again tonight in East Lansing at the Breslin Center with an 87-69 win. The Spartans improved to 10-3, but the win was still far from the dominating win that Izzo craves.

Having to play psychiatrist, psychologist, drill sergeant and various other roles with Kalin Lucas, Durrell Summers and Draymond Green this week seemed to work. Lucas didn’t start, but poured in 16 points and more importantly played 29 minutes.

Green had seven assists and three steals to lead the Spartans in those categories and 10 critical points.

Once again captain Raymar Morgan seemed to incredibly disappear. He and Lucas each played 29 minutes to lead the team, but Morgan only contributed five points and three rebounds. Morgan can’t continue to appear and disappear if the Spartans want to win a national title.

The Spartans saw that same head scratching type of role last season (when he wasn’t hurt) and in some critical games it cost them. The Spartans had only a six-point lead at the half, while playing an undermanned (injuries) and frankly an under matched team

After a tumultuous week in which Izzo played so many roles mentally with his team he admitted he wasn’t pleased with the way the media handled the Lucas incident when he said, "I was disappointed in the way that was handled…If you want to go on a search and see how many teams throw guys out of practice, don't bring a pencil or a pen. Bring a computer."

The Spartans now move on to what should be a much more difficult assignment, which is trying to win back-to-back Big Ten titles. Their next game is Saturday in Evanston against the Northwestern Wildcats. Spartan Nation will be there with a report. That game tips off prior to the Spartans Alamo Bowl game here in San Antonio.
