Strengths: Pendleton is simply put: FAT (Faithful, Available and Teachable). He does his job so well that unless he makes a mistake you can miss him. Multiple times last year, Jeremy Langford and Connor Cook bragged on their bodyguard Pendleton, and when asked, the Spartan star would only smile and deflect the praise.
Cook even told me at one point, “Trevon Pendleton might be the best player on our offense.†He is exactly what you want at FB, and in truth, outside of the bowl games I think the MSU staff has underused him in the scheme as a weapon. Let’s take a look at the Cotton Bowl to best assess this youngster.
With 12:32 on the clock in the first quarter, the Spartans had a third and goal at the Bear’s two. Pendleton gets into his block and literally drove the Bear defender to Houston while Langford waltzed in for the TD. When Pendleton gets ahold of you he simply takes you out of the play. Think about how great that was. His best description of his weakness was the play before.
Weakness: Still in that Cotton Bowl, just the play before, there was 12:44 on the clock with the Spartans having a second and goal at the Bear’s two. The Spartans were in the I formation and called a pass in the flat to Pendleton. He was wide open and dropped the ball. Dropping a pass isn’t his biggest weakness, it’s that you can ask Pendleton to cover kicks by himself or run through a wall and he would. Nobody works harder than this humble star. His weakness is that occasionally when it gets easy, he thinks too much.
He is so blue collar he just expects a down and out street fight brawl every play and he’s ready for it. He needs to look in the mirror and understand how good he really is and enjoy that his hard work brings rewards like being better than your opposition.
Final Analysis: His jersey may never hang from the fascia of the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, but I have been around MSU my entire life and you would be hard pressed to find a better Spartan. He is tough as nails, dedicated, an incredible person off the field, and one of the masters of his craft on it. He is this team’s Kyler Elsworth. He plays the game like a second grader on recess. He doesn’t do football, Pendleton loves it. He breathes it. Watching him punish defenders is a highlight reel in and of itself, but lost in his talent, is that the pride of Lucasville, OH is an All American person. A delightful young man, any parent or town or fan base would be proud to call their own.
