2015 Spartan Nation Football Profile: WR/RB/Specialist R.J. Shelton

Strengths: Shelton can do it all. He is fast, he can move in space, and the young man can create. He is a Chris Paul (LA Clippers PG) on the court. He can make things where there is nothing. In the Cotton Bowl there was 5:12 on the clock in the 1st quarter on the Baylor 11 and the Spartans had a first and ten. The Spartans had a double TE set with Cook alone in the gun. Shelton came in motion from Cookâ€™s right took the quick handoff and simply out ran guys (some defenders that had the angle) and took it to the house. He is electric. He reminds me a lot of former Spartan DeAndra Cobb, but with more talent. He is a true star.

Weakness: You would think that a super star like Shelton would be full of confidence; maybe even arrogance. You would be wrong. Shelton, at times, can be his own worst enemy when it comes to confidence.

Letâ€™s look at the OSU game. Third quarter, 9:35 on the clock, and MSU had a second and ten at the OSU 26 losing 28-21. The Spartans are in the gun and here comes Shelton from the WR spot in motion for a jet sweep again, this time from the right to the left. He waited for the play to develop and ran into his own man. There are times that Shelton needs to put his foot in the ground and go for it. He needs to trust himself to make people miss. It is refreshing to see such a humble young man with so much talent, but it is frustrating when he leaves yards on the field because he is tentative. Let me make ONE THING clear. Shelton IS NOT afraid, he simply at times doesnâ€™t trust himself, and he should. The young man has game, NFL game, and he needs to realize it.

Final Analysis: Shelton is a great football player. He has a terrific work ethic that is a testament to his family and is a high character good kid. Just donâ€™t look for him to tell you. He is humble. Constantly working and has spent a sick amount of time on the jugs machine getting his hands even better. He spent the offseason working on his hands. He is a threat when he is handed the ball. If he can prove that his hands have improved, his ceiling is limitless. The NFL craves talent like Shelton and with the character to match, he is THE REAL DEAL.

I not only like the young man as a player, I enjoy watching him with his teammates. He has their respect and on a team of 105 young men, that tells you something. I have seen him stop practice and his teammates ooh and ahh; just like youâ€™ve done if youâ€™ve see him.
