Answering your Michigan State Football Questions and Emails…

Hondo, I am curious of your thoughts on the recent de-commitments of football pledges. I know they are young and searching for the best options for them. Also, many people have been in their ears. But there are other options for MSU also. Thanks and keep up the good reporting. Mike

That is part of the game at this level. Alabama has had them as well, so have many others at the top tier. The issue is that Dantonio only had three de-commitments until he had five this year and Spartan fans are not used to it.

MSU was supposed to have a dominant DL and good front 7. But they've struggled in enough games to call them inconsistent. I don't understand why the run D has dropped off significantly with seniors on the DL with lots of talent/depth. Are the LBs that bad? Is the DL overrated? Scheme related? What say you? Matt Nagaj

MSU has had to use their very talented LB’s more helping in pass coverage, so they have not been able to load the box as much as the past. The DL needs to perform better, but they did blitz more against Maryland. This season’s attack is not as blitz heavy as the past.

Hondo, do you have any idea on Ed Davis? How is he healing? His future? Karen in Holland

All I hear is how well he is doing physically and he is looking great. Also, here is some unreported news. He is going to apply for a medical redshirt and come back.

Hondo, I love your stuff and would like to hear your answer on a question a group of guys I have breakfast with every week have. If MSU were to lose to the Buckeyes and finish 10-2 in the regular season would it be a disappointment? Keith Day

Yes it would. Not a failure, but 100% a disappointment. They said they had to reach higher and have embraced wanting more. I respect that. You never call a ten win regular season a failure, but it is more than fair to call one this year (should it happen) a disappointment because it would be.

Hondo, I loved your interview on ESPN and your comments on Cook being a captain. I appreciated your thoughts that it doesn’t matter on this team. Jim Baer

Thanks Jim. I meant what I said. This team has proven that they can win with Connor not being a captain. It is irrelevant to MSU. It may be relevant to an NFL team, but it means zero to this team. He is the straw that stirs the drink at MSU and is a game changer.

Hondo, I liked your comments about many parts of this season for MSU football being “Confusing.” Do you think it is all related to Narduzzi not being here? John L Smith was a great coach until he lost his assistant who is now at Louisville. Erwin T.

I do not think all of the confusion is because of Narduzzi not being here; some for sure, but not all. By the way, the Coach at Louisville is Bobby Petrino and you are right that JLS was a different coach without him, but Dantonio is not JLS and is a terrific coach with or without Narduzzi.

Dear Hondo: Is Ohio State vulnerable to multiple tight end sets? Given the expected rainy/windy weather conditions, the QB injury, the need keep the Buckeye offense off the field, etc, could we see multiple tight end sets being a staple on Saturday? Best regards, Glenn T. Marrichi

Could we? Sure, we do already on a regular basis and I would expect it would benefit a QB who is not 100% to have shorter passes. I have zero concerns about Connor throwing touch passes, but I do on ones that will need him to zip it and put it in a tight window. Especially as the game progresses.
