Dear Hondo, as you know my child gets plenty of playing time so my question isn’t coming from a place of a disgruntled parent. It is more truly searching for answers. I watched Trae Waynes make a big mistake last year at CMU and get benched until the Buffalo Wings Bowl. Nick Hill and Andre Sims have lost jobs because of mistakes. Kevin Muma missed two field goals and no longer has the duties. I watch on defense and special teams continued lack of production and mistakes get a young man benched. I support that. On offense I watch young men make the same mistakes or lack in production on a consistent basis and still get trotted out of the field. Can you explain that? Our special teams and defense are the heart of this team, why is accountability good for them and not others? They even got rid of Coach Gill, but won’t do the offense that way? (Name withheld)

I ask myself and wonder the same things. I know others do as well. I do not know. I see the same things that you do.

 

Hondo, question regarding qb Terry…Realistically being on the scout team, can he really compete for the starting position for the 2014 season? Especially with the way Dantonio put some weight on Maxwell’s year of experience in his decision making for the qb situation. And is there any possibility that
Terry will transfer? Thanks Dave

I have reported this before. Mark Dantonio told me back inJune that if Terry redshirted it would almost certainly preclude him for the starter’s role next year to start the season. Now, he could earn it later in the year, but his redshirting this year, based on Dantonio’s previous comments, means he WILL NOT be your starter at the beginning of next year. I do not anticipate a transfer from him.

You are the consumer. Of course it is fair. Defense wins championships. Offense sells tickets. The MSU offense, for essentially two years, has been bad.

 

Hondo, Every time I am asked for donations to MSU athletics I am told how I am part of the program and I count and I matter and they need me to invest in championships. Then I hear Coach Dantonio say things at his press conference about only caring about those in the bubble. Sorry if you don’t like my complaints about your terrible offense coach, but I am part of the program and I count, remember? Or is that just when I sign a check? Chris

I see your point Chris. Spartan fans are very vocal about the offense and as I stated above, you are the consumer. You are the buyer and while the record is 6-1 and a seventh straight year of a bowl game, fans are perturbed.

 

Hondo, I used my tickets for every game of the John L. Smith debacle. We had some dumb losses, but they scored points and at least the circus was a show. I never once struggled to get people to go to a game. We are winning and we are stable, but I would rather stay home than go up to MSU, have a diminished tailgate experience, and watch soccer. Sorry, but I want to see points. I am seriously considering not renewing season tickets next year and just buying Michigan game tickets from the Ticket Machine. Bob

WOW Bob. I say it again, you are the consumer and what you do with your money is your decision. Mark Dantonio has done some amazing things, but I see your frustration even if I don’t wholeheartedly agree. I would much rather watch this, but to each their own.

 

Hondo, Coach Dantonio had a pathetic offense last year and he has one this year. He can say that, “I won’t apologize for a win,” and I agree. Can he apologize for a MAC offense? Can he apologize for not demanding excellence from his offense? Can he apologize for a 6-1 record that is nothing short of smoke and mirrors based on the quality of competition? Can he apologize for joining the Big Ten east next year where this crap will get us slaughtered? Why can’t we have a Narduzzi mentality on offense that says I am not a victim, you are. Disgusted and I am not apologizing. Jake

Well Jake, his comments did bring a lot of response this week. I agree with Coach that you have to play the schedule you have, BUT, there is no excuse for the continued ineptitude of the offense. Coach Saban is famous for saying if you are not coaching it, you are allowing it. This is on Coach D. he is allowing the offense to stink.

 

Hondo, you tweeted last week that Coach needed to look at changing QBs. Later you complimented Cook on getting his confidence back. Do you dislike Cook, or do you regret saying that now? Ron

Not at all. Connor is a super kid. My statement was based on his play and it wasn’t good. I think Dantonio had to consider it. He did. He said so. I want him to do well and he deserved to have it mentioned he was getting his confidence back, but this isn’t a 5th year senior with three years of starters experience. MSU has little room for error and they went until the 8:55 mark of the 4th quarter before they scored against the B1G worst defense and rated right at or below (depending on stat) 100th in the nation. No excuse for that. It wasn’t a struggling running game, OL, or dropped passes. He simply was not playing well. He admitted it.

 

Hondo, we were told that we wanted a QB who could run. Dantonio even said that Cook was a 100 yard rusher in a game. He won’t run and he isn’t a 100 yard rusher. Since that is why we made the move, can we go back to Maxwell or try Tyler O’Connor? Maxwell didn’t run, but was a hell of a lot more accurate. Joseph

I think they made the move for more than running reasons, but your point is germane.

 

Hondo, I have family that moved to Alabama for work. They live close to Auburn so they have been season ticket holders for 12 years. They had a coach win a national title and get fired because the program took a step back. I don’t want Coach D fired; I do want to see him attack the failures of the offense aggressively. Times are tough, dollars are hard to appropriate for this. Accepting this offense is not acceptable. Talk to him Hondo. People don’t dislike him, but we sure dislike his offense. It’s terrible and it needs help. He always talks about being fair. How about being fair to the fans?
