Mark Dantonio Ending Spring By Catching a Big Fish: Former UM 2016 QB Commit Messiah deWeaver Turns Green
It’s spring time in the Midwest. We know that even as snow still arrived as late as this afternoon. With the arrival of spring the lawns are turning green and spring has sprung. It’s not just the lawns turning green and the robins returning that are harbingers of spring in the Midwest. Another true sign of spring is when other things in Ohio turn green.
Mark Dantonio has said since the day he arrived that winning, “Is about players.†He also knows that the better your players are, the better your coaching appears. Well on Wednesday a VERY GOOD coaching staff got a commitment from VERY GOOD QB prospect in Huber Heights, OH QB Messiah deWeaver.
It was simply moments after the Spartans had concluded their spring game draft (the ninth year of doing so) that deWeaver made his announcement. deWeaver said of the Spartans, “I love coach Dantonio and his staff and what they're doing with that program, a top-five national program. Everything about Michigan State I fell in love with when I first stepped on campus. I just can't wait to get up there and be a Spartan." He isn’t waiting long. He will be in attendance this Saturday for the green and white spring game.
The 6’3†200 pound deWeaver pledged to immediately become a recruiter for the Spartans. He vowed to being calling on several top tier recruits to join him in East Lansing. Talking specifically about this weekend deWeaver said, “A lot of big-time recruits are coming up so we're gonna get it done."
deWeaver is technically the fourth player to pledge to the green and white for the 2016 class, and already when reading the tea leaves it is looking to be a solid haul. With a truck load of seniors in the 2015 class, MSU has more openings then it has had in multiple classes and Dantonio would like to fill all 25 scholarships. Based on the level of talent looking towards East Lansing, doing that with top flight recruits appears to be shaping up nicely.
Cole Chewins is a gray shirt for the 2016 class, meaning he will enroll this summer and pay his own way until January. His scholarship comes from the 2016 class. Chewins is a powerful OL that many feel could have competed, if not been the top player in the state of Michigan for 2016 had he played in high school next year. Along with Chewins who has already signed, the Spartans have a commitment from the brother of current offensive line stars Jack & Brian Allen, Matt Allen.
The other commit the Spartans have for the 2016 class is a toy for deWeaver. Cameron Chambers is a 6’2†200 pound wide receiver out of New Jersey who is one of the top prospects in the East. He and deWeaver should combine for some big time memories in Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans invaded Dantonio’s home state and the land now occupied by Urban Meyer and hauled the number one running back for the 2015 class out of the state of Ohio in L.J. Scott. deWeaver is the number one QB this year. Regardless of what number he is, he is number one on Mark Dantonio’s board and that is all that matters and Dantonio reminds Urban that Ohio still has plenty of green.
In recruiting the QB is a key cog in every class. With deWeaver being a Midwest youngster, he knows nearly all of the top tier 2016 and 2017 recruits. With his work ethic and pledge to bring more with him, the already bright future of Spartan football, just somehow got brighter.
