Michigan State CB Darian Hicks Talks Spartan Football as He Transitions from a Pup to a Dawg!
Q: How do you see similarities in your game and Darqueze game?
HICKS: We’re both students of the game. We take what Coach Barnett says to us in the film room and we apply it to the field.
Q: What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned from Coach Barnett?
HICKS: The biggest thing I’ve learned is how to stay cool. We have a thing called being in-face and out-of-face. If you’re out-of-face you wanna stay cool and you just wanna make sure you can catch the receiver instead of looking back at the ball.
Q: How hard is it to stay cool when a guy catches one on ya?
HICKS: I mean, you get frustrated at first, but then after that it’s just you have to have a short memory about it and just go out there the next play.
Q: How do you think the DB’s showed out this spring?
HICKS: I think we all did really good. Jalyn Powell had some good hits against us on the white team. And then Jermaine had an interception, Kurtis Drummond had a pick, I had a pick at the last play, and so did Demetrious Cox. He had a pick from the green team, Ezra Robinson did too. We all had a very productive day. I think the DB’s showed out amd showed everybody what’s in store for the season.
Q: How would you evaluate your whole spring?
HICKS: It’s kinda hard to say just because I got hurt during spring and I had to miss three weeks of it, and then I came back Tuesday. I came back with the first team. That still shows that the coach still trusted me even though I was hurt. They still believe that I could be the guy that fills the spot.
Q: What was your injury?
HICKS: I had a thigh bruise.
Q: Do you feel like you’ve established yourself as that #1 guy going into fall?
HICKS: Yes, I think I have actually. But we’ll just have to see what fall camp has in store for us.
