Michigan State flips 2024 defensive back from ACC program

The Spartans added another to their 2024 recruiting class!

Chalk up another one for the Spartans!

Michigan State has added to its 2024 recruiting class on consecutive days, as three-star Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers Academy defensive back Syair Torrence announced his commitment to the Spartans on Sunday afternoon.

"First and foremost I want to thank the man above with all the blessings he has given me," Torrence wrote in a statement released on social media. "I want to thank my family and coaches for going through this process with me and helping me find my path. I can't forget about my teammates, I want to thank you all for supporting me throughout this process. With that being said I will be committing to Michigan State University!! Go Green"

Torrence is the first recruiting win for new MSU cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado, who serves as the Spartans' area recruiter in the Northeast. Salgado was hired by head coach Mel Tucker this offseason after spending the previous six years with the Buffalo Bills.

When Salgado was hired in mid-March, Torrence was committed to the hometown Syracuse Orangeman. Salgado went to work in presenting Michigan State as an alternative option for Torrence, offering the three-star a scholarship on April 24. Less than a month later, Torrence re-opened his recruitment on May 6, before taking official visits to Rutgers (June 2), Michigan State (June 9), Syracuse (June 16) and Boston College (June 21).

Ultimately, the Spartans won the battle, and Torrence becomes the seventh member of MSU's 2024 class. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder is ranked No. 658 overall, No. 88 wide receiver and No. 5 player from the state of New York in his class, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. While he is listed as a "wide receiver" on 247Sports.com, Torrence played on both sides of the ball in high school and projects as a defensive back at MSU.

Torrence's commitment comes on the heels of another major recruiting win for Michigan State yesterday, when Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day four-star running back Anthony Carrie gave his verbal pledge to the Spartans.

After a slow start to their 2024 recruiting class, the Spartans are starting to gain a little momentum on the trail. Carrie and Torrence are the third and fourth verbal pledges for MSU in the last two weeks, joining three-star safety Reggie Powers out of Ohio and defensive back Camren Campbell from Florida. Michigan State had previously earned verbal pledges from three-star cornerback Jaylen Thompson out of Tennessee, as well as a pair of three-star interior offensive lineman in Andrew Dennis (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) and Logan Bennett (Baltimore, Md.).

With Torrence's commitment, Michigan State's recruiting class climbs to No. 59 in the country by 247Sports. While that's far below what Spartan fans have come to expect from Tucker and his staff — MSU signed back-to-back Top 25 classes in the previous two recruiting cycles — the Spartans' climb could continue soon, as several of Michigan State's recruiting targets are set to announce their commitments in the coming weeks.
