Some of the Questions Facing MSU Football in 18!

THE BIGGEST QUESTIONS ALL SPARTAN FANS HAVE GOING INTO THIS FOOTBALL SEASON.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – July is almost coming to an end, students will be coming back to campus, and the cheers from Spartan Stadium will be heard from miles away. This means one thing and one thing only and that is #5 Spartan Football is approaching.

The second the team left San Diego, preparation for the 2018-2019 season was already beginning. The first game August 31st is going to be filled with team chemistry, determination, and new goals.

There are 20 returning players coming back but missing is Brian Allen a recent draft pick to the Los Angeles Rams and an outstanding center. We will look at a few questions most Spartan fans have, such as is who will be replacing Brian?

The Allen legacy remains strong on the rooster as Sophomore Matt Allen will be competing to win over the starting center position. Tyler Higby will compete with Allen, and we always know that the mad scientists known as Mark State (OL Coach) will mix it up even more.

A dark horse player who we might be seeing some action this year is Junior Bryce Wilker. Bryce is a 4th year walk on, looking to see game action.

Two other positions that will be in competition to fill the Offensive line are guard and tackle. Tyler Higby played all 13 games with seven starts at left guard, and second-year player Kevin Jarvis returns to win over the starting right guard position.

Returning fourth-year player Cole Chewins has started 16 consecutive games at left tackle and third-year player Luke Campbell will return to play at right tackle. However, Sophomore AJ Arcuri and Jordan Reid will be competing for playing time at tackle during the 2018 season.

The special team group is a select group on the team that has guys that have earned their spots proudly. Kicker Matt Coghlin had a breakthrough year having honorable mention as All Big-Ten by the media as well as being recognized to the BTN All-Freshman Team. And we cannot forget the 34-yard field goal to give the Spartans a 27-24 win over No.7 Penn State.

Entering his fourth year as the starting punter Jake Hartbarger is looking to end his career as a Spartan and set records for his career-long, yards, and average. Hartbarger has many honorable mentions such as MSU Downtown Coaches Club Award (most outstanding player: special teams) and honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media to name a few.

Hartbarger and his long snapper Collin Caflisch are a dynamic duo and have a strong bond on the field. Caflisch will be entering his third season as the starting long snapper.

Now we ask the question of who will be the kickoff guy, as Brett Scanlon handled kickoff duties for the 2017 season in all 13 games with a 60.9pyk.

This position is now up for grabs. Redshirt Freshman Cole Hahn and Tyler Hunt along with current kicker Matt Coghlin will be competing for kickoff time this upcoming season.
