No player grabbed the nation’s attention like Spartan DE Shilique Calhoun. A favorite of the media with his ever present quote machine opinions and the nation with his smile that made Spartan Nation ICON Earvin “Magic” Johnson Jealous.
So as he heads to the NFL Combine this week here in Indianapolis, he is looking at a position change at the next level. With many multiple NFL teams moving from the traditional 4-3 (What the Spartans run) defense to the 3-4 in order to maximize speed, that means the lanky speedster from Michigan State could be a prize catch.
Now that doesn't preclude him from keeping his hand in the dirt at DE for a 4-3 team, it just opens possibilities for him with a growing number for 3-4 teams. Something that has to be considered, or he would be hindered to only 4-3 teams.
Nobody knows defense better than Mark Dantonio and his opinion carries a lot of weight with the NFL. So does Dantonio think Calhoun can make the transition?
He said, “He would be a 3-4 outside backer. The backer that would usually rush. He has the ability to drop. He’s got great hands. Inevitably he could have played tight end if he would have been coached to that level. He runs well and is a big body guy and long, very long. So I think he’ll have tremendous success and you know, he played with his wrist throughout the entire season, probably more of a precaution than anything.”
You can watch the NFL combine all week on the NFL Network. The Spartans have seven players competing including Cook, Jack Conklin, Jack Allen, Lawrence Thomas, Shilique Calhoun, Aaron Burbridge and DT Joel Heath.
The Spartans will also hold their annual NFL pro day on March 16, at the Duffy Daugherty Football Building. That even is not open to the public, but Spartan Nation will have complete coverage.
