Spartan Football 2016 DB Commit Austin Andrews Drawn to MSU By More than Just Football!

A normal 17-year-old has plenty of things pulling at them, to the point that staying grounded can be very hard.

When that 17-year-old is a highly sought after recruit, those pressures multiply by 100.

Columbus, Ohio native Austin Andrews is one of the rare kids who has kept his priorities in order and stayed grounded throughout the cutthroat recruiting process.

The 6’0 defensive back wasn’t drawn to Michigan State only because of the great tradition the Spartans have at the position, it was because he and head coach Mark Dantonio share a common bond.

They are both men of faith.

“I believe that if you have a good relationship with God and do everything possible to help others and improve day by day, that’s just amazing,” Andrews said. “There’s no way you can stop that.”

Dantonio is not shy about his faith either, and Andrews said that for a player coming from a Catholic school, Dantonio’s faith played a role in him coming to Michigan State.

“It was definitely a great standout for me,” he said. “Especially coming from the school I come from, where we have a strong faith life, that was really cool to see.”

Of course, Dantonio was able to sell the defensive back tradition at Michigan State pretty easily. With first round picks in the last few NFL Drafts Andrews said the history of the position under Dantonio was another strong selling point.

“It was like, wow, a guy who loves playing the defensive side of the ball as much as you? That’s a perfect fit,” he said. “I thought that was amazing.”

Andrews is also a player from enemy territory, but he said when the time comes to face Ohio State in Columbus, there will be no love lost between him and his hometown.

“I live for games like that,” he said. “To play against guys that you have known since middle school, or know through the grape-vine, those are just amazing moments.”
