Suspended Spartan RB Delton Williams Has His Day In Court

For Mark Dantonio and Michigan State one of the biggest question marks that they face heading into the 2015 season is at running back. On a team with very little questions, this is one of them. It wasn’t always that way.

After the 2014 season ended Dantonio and his staff thought Delton Williams would step in to that role of the starting RB. That changed in March 16. Spartan Nation reported on March 17 that, “Spartan RB Delton Williams from Erie, PA, was arrested on charges of brandishing a firearm by the Michigan State Police. According to people at the Ingham County Jail in Mason (where he was taken for custody), the crime is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine.”

Yesterday Mr. Williams headed to East Lansing’s 54-B District court where he informed the court that he had accepted a plea deal. Williams accepted the offer where he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge involving a weapon (something he was permitted legally to have) and has agreed NOT to seek a permit for concealed status in any other state.

With this plea, the junior from Erie, PA has another set of problems. He is in violation of ordinance 18.01 of the Michigan State University Board of Trustees. It says:

“.01 Except as permitted by state law regulating firearms, no person shall possess any firearm or weapon anywhere upon property governed by the Board. Persons residing on property governed by the Board shall store any and all firearms and weapons with the Department of Police and Public Safety.”

Since his arrest Williams has been suspended by MSU head football coach Mark Dantonio and did not participate in the remainder of spring football practice. Dantonio faces a difficult decision. One that we at Spartan Nation will explain in much more detail soon, but it could seriously impact Dantonio’s team from a chemistry perspective inside the locker room. Dantonio has steadfastly maintained since his arrival that, “One of the biggest reasons we win at Michigan State is chemistry.”

Dantonio has not spoken publicly about the Williams situation after issuing this statement soon after it originally happened, “We’re aware of the incident. All of our student-athletes are held to a high standard, and individuals will be held accountable for their actions. We will manage this situation internally.”

Williams returns to 54-B East Lansing District Court on December 16. At that time he will learn the costs and fines associated with this agreement. Also part of the deal was that the Smith and Wesson 40 caliber pistol surrendered into custody when Williams was arrested will not be returned.
