Spartans Offer Scholarship to TE from California

Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith offered a scholarship to budding tight end Caleb Tafua from California.

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith continues to aggressively pursue the players he feels will give MSU the best chance to be competitive in the next few seasons. After offering multiple defensive players scholarships in the 2025 and 2026 recruiting classes, Smith has now provided a scholarship offer to a tight end from California, who is climbing the recruiting charts.

Coach Smith has extended a scholarship offer to Caleb Tafua of Lakewood, California, a tight end prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Tafua announced in late March that he received a scholarship from the Spartans.

The California native recently announced that he had received a scholarship offer from the Spartans. "Thank God for another blessing," Tafua said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Humbled and blessed to say I have received an offer from Michigan State University #GoSpartans."

MSU will have to put its best foot forward to secure the tight end's commitment, as he already has offers from some of the best football schools in the country. However, even with his current offers, Tafua faces the possibility, maybe even the likelihood, that he won't see much playing time early in his career at some of the more prominent football schools that have offered him. MSU would allow him to make an immediate impact for a Spartans football program on the rebound.

According to 247Sports, MSU will compete against many other schools for Tafua's services, as he has received offers from over 10 schools, including Spartan Big Ten foes Michigan, Penn State and USC, as well as Utah, Nevada, California, Washington State, Oregon State, Tennessee, Arizona, Stanford and Colorado State.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Tafua has the frame and athleticism necessary to compete on a high level when he gets to the collegiate level. He would give the Spartans a legitimate offensive threat as they rebuild their program. The fact that Tafua is valued by so many other top football programs around the country proves how valuable he would be to the Spartans, should he accept their offer.

Coach Smith and MSU will depend heavily on their ability to sign recruits like Tafua as they hope to return to conference championship and playoff contention one day.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
