Marcus Freeman Updates Notre Dame Injuries vs NC State
Notre Dame will be without one of its starting kickoff return men when the Fighting Irish head to North Carolina to play North Carolina State this Saturday. Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman ruled out Devyn Ford during his early Thursday afternoon media session.
“Devyn will be out,” Freeman said. “(He is) still in concussion protocol from the last game.”
Ford suffered the concussion during the first quarter of Notre Dame’s 56-3 win over Tennessee State in last Saturday’s home opener. He was in the process of returning the Tigers’ kick when he suffered a helmet to helmet hit from Tennessee State defensive back Zachery Drake.
The helmet to helmet hit was not flagged for targeting and it was never reviewed for targeting but Ford was tended to by Notre Dame medical staff for several minutes as he laid flat on the Notre Dame Stadium turf. He was eventually helped off the field and never returned to the game afterwards.
With Ford out this week, Freeman said fellow running backs, sophomore Jadarian Price and freshman Jeremiyah Love, would see kickoff return duty this Saturday against the Wolfpack.
Freeman also updated the status of linebacker Nolan Ziegler. The sophomore missed all of fall training camp with an undisclosed personal issue.
“Nolan Ziegler is continuously dealing with a personal issue that has to...it really relates to mental health,” Freeman explained. “So, he’s progressing but he’s just dealing with a personal issue.”
Ziegler vaulted himself into contention for potential playing time this season with a very good showing during spring practices.
