Notre Dame Updated 2023 Scholarship Chart

With the transfer portal now closed we look at where Notre Dame is from a scholarship standpoint

Notre Dame heads into the summer with a good idea of where it stands from a scholarship standpoint. The transfer portal window has now closed and we know who Notre Dame lost. Of course, Notre Dame's coaching staff will look to add a little bit of help, and now they have the scholarship room to do so.

Below is a breakdown of where things stand, followed by the entire scholarship chart, position by position.

SCHOLARSHIP BREAKDOWN

Here's the latest with where Notre Dame stands from a scholarship standpoint.

Quarterback - 3
Running Back - 4
Wide Receiver - 9
Tight End - 6
Offensive Line - 17

Defensive End - 9
Defensive Tackle - 8
Linebacker - 8
Safety - 7
Cornerback - 8

Offense - 39
Defense - 40
Specialists - 3

TOTAL - 82

DEPARTURES

Since the spring began Notre Dame has had five players leave the program. Four players entered the transfer portal and another retired from football.

Rising junior wide receiver Lorenzo Styles entered the portal two days before the Blue-Gold Game. In the week since the game was completed we also saw quarterback Tyler Buchner, running back Logan Diggs and linebacker Prince Kollie jump in the portal.

Wide receiver Kaleb Smith - who transferred in from Virginia Tech over the winter - retired from football in the middle of spring practice.

Those five departures allowed Notre Dame to get under the scholarship limit of 85 and gives the Irish staff room to add players

WHERE THINGS STAND

The departures opened up some room, but they also created some question marks from a numbers standpoint.

Kollie's departure won't have much of an impact and the Irish still return eight linebackers. All three freshmen in the 2023 class arrived in the spring and showed a lot of promise, so the Irish are in good shape there.

Buchner's departure leaves the Irish quarterbacks light on numbers (four is the ideal) and very light on experience behind Sam Hartman. As long as Hartman stays healthy this season the Irish should be good there, and the major numbers question won't become a problem until next season.

From a numbers standpoint, Notre Dame should be in good shape at running back when you consider that Chris Tyree could easily slide over there in an emergency situation. Five is the ideal running back number, and Tyree gives them five. Of course, the concern is that rising sophomore Jadarian Price is coming back from a major Achilles injury and classmate Gi'Bran Payne battled to stay healthy in high school.

If everyone stays healthy Notre Dame will be just fine, but that's quite a thin margin the Irish are dealing with.

Wide receiver is the interesting one. Notre Dame would like to be at 10 scholarship receivers and right now they are at nine. There are question marks about experience, obviously, but from a numbers standpoint Notre Dame remains in good position at wideout. If the freshmen are able to help out the Irish would still be in good shape if Tyree needed to move to running back, and more injuries don't happen.

Notre Dame needs to add at least one safety from the portal, if it can find the right player. A second safety wouldn't be such a bad idea, which would then leave the Irish in position to possibly add a running back or wide receiver, if it can find one.
